00 As an Assistant County Attorney, you will serve as legal advisor to the Weld County Department of Human Services (WCDHS). You will provide legal services, advice, and representation to WCDHS and ensure WCDHS is properly represented in all legal proceedings. You will advise WCDHS staff on legal aspects of casework pertaining to dependency and neglect cases, child support cases, juvenile delinquency cases, court ordered investigations, and any other needs. You will assist staff in making case decisions consistent with the Children's Code, Colorado Code of Regulations, Child Support Enforcement Procedures, and other applicable authority. You will prepare staff for litigation and handle all case needs through case closure. - Job Description Assistant County Attorney III Legal Support
- 80% Provide legal services to WCDHS in the areas of dependency and neglect, child support establishment and enforcement, and juvenile delinquency law, which may include work with adult protection, legislation, and appellate advocacy.
Provide other legal or administrative services as requested by the County Attorney and/or Managing County Attorney. Provide legal support in areas including case filing decisions, placement and custody decisions, necessary services for families, permanency options in the best interest of children and child support establishment and enforcement. Independently conduct legal research, organize trial and hearing preparation, draft legal documents, prepare litigation, and represent the WCDHS in all legal proceedings including jury trials, termination of parental rights hearings, and contempt proceedings. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local statutes and ordinances, to include research and interpretation of the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure, Colorado Children's Code, Colorado Code of Regulations, Child Support Enforcement Procedures, and portions of the Probate and Social Services Code, or any other authority that pertains to the same. - 20% Attend meetings and trainings in areas consistent with job requirements.
Attend meetings with 19th Judicial District Court Staff to ensure best local practices and facilitate collaborative efforts with professionals in the dependency and neglect, child support, and juvenile delinquency law. Collaborate with counsel representing parents, children, youth, at-risk adults, and other parties to identify family needs, case issues, and work towards resolution through mediation, negotiation, stipulation and/or trial. Maintain a satisfactory working relationship with client, court staff, opposing counsel, all fellow employees and colleagues, and any others with whom contact is had in your professional capacity. - Required Qualifications Assistant County Attorney III Required Education Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
Colorado Law License and in good standing with the Colorado Bar. Preferred Experience 3 years Minimum 3 years' experience as a practicing attorney. Prior experience in dependency and neglect law, child support enforcement, juvenile law, or commensurate experience preferred. Skills and Abilities Candidate must possess the knowledge of the Colorado Rules of Evidence and Rules of Civil Procedure and experience applying applicable law in trial advocacy, brief writing, discovery procedures, strategic case planning, and/or other commensurate experience. Candidate must possess strong legal research and writing skills and demonstrated motions practice. Candidate must possess general knowledge of the Colorado Children's Code, Rules of Civil Procedure, Colorado Code of Regulations, Child Support Enforcement Procedures, and additional authority pertaining to the same. Candidate must possess general understanding of social work, and medical, psychiatric, and psychological needs and treatment of children involved in the juvenile court system. Candidate must possess sufficient computer skills to perform essential job functions. Candidate must possess the ability to communicate professionally and effectively with the client, fellow employees and colleagues, opposing counsel, and the court. Candidate must possess the ability to manage high volume court divisions and complex legal issues, to work quickly and efficiently, and work independently with minimal supervision or direction. Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to employment start date. Licenses and Certifications Bar Admission State of Colorado Upon Hire Required Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to employment start date. Required Driving is essential in this position. Candidate must have a valid Driver's License and Liability Insurance Upon Hire Required Candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) evaluation and if hired, will be subject to continuous monthly MVR monitoring and random drug screens throughout employment. Prior trial experience specifically including application of the Colorado Rules of Evidence, Rules of Civil Procedure, jury trial advocacy, and discovery procedures.
