Washington, DC Job Details Full-time $50,000 - $65,000 a year 1 day ago Benefits 403(b) matching Health savings account Health insurance Dental insurance Paid time off Vision insurance Employee discount 403(b) Life insurance Qualifications Pest control Interpersonal skills Customer service Administrative experience Veterinary surgical instrument assistance Full Job Description The Shelter Coordinator is responsible for the herd health of the shelter population which includes acting as the primary medical care provider for shelter animals under the direction of the veterinarians and controlling the flow of the animals moving through the shelter. The Shelter Coordinator also works closely with the Operations Manager to help supervise the day-to-day functions of the shelter. This position acts in replacement of the Operations Manager in the absence of the Operations Manager.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Shelter Medicine Perform medical intake physical examinations and diagnostic tests. Able to interpret treatment sheets and administer treatment to patients (PO, topically, otic, ocular) under the direction of a veterinarian. Follow veterinary care protocols for animals in the BVSPCA - including medical, behavior and general care protocols for the health and well-being of the animals; individually and as a herd. Participate in medical rounds as directed by the Operations Manager. Animal Care Acquires a working knowledge of all aspects of shelter operations, related animal laws and ordinances, and basic aspects of companion animal health and behavior issues. Keeps an open line of communication with the shelter office staff, kennel staff, medical staff and upper management.
  • Manage workflow and day-to-day operations of the shelter in the absence of the Operations Manager. This includes managing staff and the animal population.
  • Make decisions proactively and with critical thinking.
  • De-escalate situations when needed.
Make decisions that reduce liability. Performs other duties as defined by the Operations Manager. Administrative Duties Maintain and create patient records by accurately recording treatments, examinations and test results on PetPoint software. Client and Community Service All BVSPCA employees are responsible for providing excellent customer service to customers, animals, fellow staff, donor and all persons a BVSPCA staff member comes into contact with when working. Promote the BVSPCA in a positive manner. Communicate with others with respect. Create a positive work environment by limiting negativity. Be efficient, a team player, positive and proactive in problem solving. Diversity and Inclusiveness Work effectively with individuals and colleagues from diverse communities and cultures. Safety Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practice. Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk. Maintain a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area; follow all pest and rodent control protocols.
QUALIFICATIONS
Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the BVSPCA. Experience with humane animal handling and restraint techniques of healthy, ill and feral animals. Experience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective and humane manner, especially larger and possibly untrained pets. Comfortable working in the shelter environment and willing to accommodate animals in the work place. Self-motivated and able to initiate and complete tasks.
