Engagement Center Reports to: Engagement Center Manager About Us Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC) is a human services agency helping families and individuals in all stages of homelessness and housing insecurity. Services include emergency shelter, housing search case management, daytime drop-in, street outreach, supportive housing, homeless/eviction prevention and connections to supplemental services. SHC also operates Project SOUP, which is a food service program that includes a pantry marketplace, community meals and delivery of groceries to the homebound. The agency environment is fast-paced with the provision of a variety of on-demand services, from crisis intervention to long-term stabilization support. To learn more please visit our . Position Summary The Housing Navigator is responsible for supporting homeless individuals on their path to stable housing. In this role, the Housing Navigator will assist clients in accessing appropriate programs and resources, ensuring a successful transition to housing and overall greater stability. This will require evaluating situations, making appropriate referrals, and diligently coordinating housing applications with the overall goal of empowering clients and helping them find realistic housing in which they can be successful. The Housing Navigator works closely with the Engagement Center team and Adult Shelter Manager to coordinate client support with the goal of permanent housing. The Housing Navigator provides client housing services through both intensive case management and drop-in assistance. Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities Provide extensive housing search and comprehensive care coordination, including identifying potential housing opportunities, filling out applications with clients, supporting them in the lease-up process, assisting with finding start-up cost assistance, and more; Attend regular meetings with SHC's Engagement Center team to coordinate care management for clients and collaborate to provide housing search assistance; Maintain a caseload of at least 16 active clients, meeting weekly with clients to provide consistent support while working toward housing goals; Advocate on behalf of clients to external agencies and housing providers, following up to assure they are being fairly considered; Provide crisis intervention and support to clients; Complete all funding source paperwork and maintain accurate and updated client files (digital and physical files); Refer and assist with access to mainstream resources and benefits to address unmet needs (including public benefits, shelter, healthcare, health insurance, recovery programs, mental health supports, legal services, employment/education services); Work with clients throughout the case management process by providing information, support, and advocacy while tracking their progress toward their goals; Create and maintain positive relationships with providers who offer vital resources for our clients (including meal programs, emergency shelters, day programs, transitional housing programs, churches and advocacy services), allowing for accurate and efficient referrals; Attend individual supervision, staff and community meetings; Perform all other duties as assigned to ensure the overall smooth operation of all agency programs. Education, Abilities, Competencies and Experience Required Preference will be given to applicants who are multilingual and speak Spanish or Portuguese Passionate about supporting individuals in need of stable housing Determined individual who can empower and persevere with clients facing many barriers to housing Position requires ability to work with all homeless sub-populations, including individuals and families with Substance Use Disorder, mental health challenges, domestic violence histories, HIV/AIDS, developmental disabilities, veterans, elderly individuals, and people with multiple diagnoses Proven ability to function as a persistent advocate for unhoused individuals Minimum two years experience in human services Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, with special attention to details Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with other agencies Working knowledge of resources and services available to the homeless and low-income populations Proficient computer skills with email, data entry, word processing and spreadsheets Supervisory Responsibility This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. Work Environment This job operates in an office and professional environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. Occasional local travel may be required based on the needs of the organization. Physical Demands This is mostly sedentary outside of travel in an office space. This would require the ability to sit at a desk, frequent walking, bend or stand as necessary. Position Type and Expected Hours of Work Designated days and schedule will primarily be Monday-Friday from 9 am-5 pm, though hours may vary based on the needs of the organization and may require weekends, nights, or early mornings on occasion. Travel Position requires minimal travel; based on the needs of the operations and business.
