Engagement Specialist-UMD Hope Day Center Urban Ministries of Durham - 4.1 Durham, NC Job Details Part-time $17.50 an hour 1 hour ago Qualifications Teamwork High school diploma or GED Case management Human Services Associate's degree Full Job Description Position Summary The Engagement Specialist is responsible for creating a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment for individuals experiencing homelessness who access services at the day center. This position serves as the first point of contact for guests, builds positive relationships, provides crisis intervention and de-escalation when needed, and connects individuals with appropriate resources and supportive services. The Engagement Specialist works collaboratively with staff, community partners, and service providers to ensure guests receive compassionate, person-centered support while promoting dignity, respect, and empowerment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Guest Engagement & Support Welcome and engage guests in a respectful, trauma-informed, and nonjudgmental manner Build trusting relationships with individuals experiencing homelessness Conduct initial intake and needs assessments Provide information on available day center services and community resources Assist guests in accessing center resources including showers, phones, computers, charging stations, and other supports Encourage participation in onsite programs and partner services Resource Navigation Connect guests to housing resources, coordinated entry, shelter options, healthcare services, employment resources, and public benefits Assist individuals with completing applications for benefits and services when needed Provide referrals to community agencies and partner organizations Support guests in obtaining identification and required documentation Crisis Intervention & Conflict Resolution Monitor day center activities to ensure a safe and supportive environment Respond to crises using trauma-informed de-escalation techniques Address guest concerns, conflicts, and behavioral issues professionally Follow center protocols for incident documentation and emergency response Program Support Maintain accurate guest records and service documentation Track service utilization and program participation Assist with coordination of onsite partner schedules and resource activities Support daily operations and help maintain a clean, organized facility Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and case coordination discussions Advocacy & Relationship Building Advocate for guests' needs with internal staff and external partners Foster a culture of dignity, respect, and inclusion Build collaborative relationships with service providers and community agencies Qualifications Education High school diploma or GED required Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or related field preferred Experience Minimum of 1-2 years working with vulnerable populations, preferably individuals experiencing homelessness Experience in case management, outreach, crisis intervention, or social services preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong interpersonal and communication skills Ability to engage diverse populations with empathy and professionalism Knowledge of homelessness, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and local community resources Experience with crisis intervention and conflict resolution Strong organizational and documentation skills Ability to maintain professional boundaries Proficiency with basic computer systems and data entry Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds Ability to respond quickly in crisis situations Work Environment This position operates in a fast-paced day center environment serving individuals experiencing homelessness, including those experiencing mental health challenges, substance use disorders, and crisis situations.
