Through the Office of Community Safety, we are investing in innovative, people-centered solutions that connect individuals experiencing homelessness and crisis with meaningful support and resources. As a Peer Support Specialist , you will play a vital role in relationship-building, outreach, and compassionate engagement with some of Greensboro's most vulnerable residents. This position is ideal for someone who is empathetic, resilient, community-minded, and passionate about helping others navigate difficult circumstances with dignity and care.

Active Roster Temporary Benefits:
This is a non-benefitted position Work Schedule Daytime case management and peer support opportunities are available; however, candidates must be available to work overnight Orange Flag operations from 7:00 PM - 8:00 AM as needed . Orange Flag operations are activated during extreme heat conditions to support vulnerable community members experiencing homelessness. Why You'll Love This Opportunity Make a direct impact in the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness and crisis Support Greensboro's commitment to equity, resiliency, and compassionate public safety Be part of a collaborative, mission-driven team focused on innovative community solutions Help advance initiatives that contribute to Greensboro being the most connected city and a community with exceptional quality of life Gain meaningful experience in outreach, peer support, case management, and community engagement About the Role The Peer Support Specialist works collaboratively with the Community Safety Department to support homeless services initiatives, including: Orange Flag operations Housing First Plus Street outreach and engagement efforts In this role, you will build trusting relationships with individuals served, assist with case management and resource coordination, and provide supportive engagement during both daytime outreach and overnight operations.
Key responsibilities include:
Supporting outreach and engagement efforts with individuals experiencing homelessness Assisting clients with navigating services and accessing community resources Building rapport and fostering supportive relationships grounded in empathy and respect Working alongside Community Safety staff during Orange Flag operations Assisting with basic case management support and follow-up services Collaborating with community partners and internal teams to support client needs This role reflects the City's values of being people-centered, purpose-driven, and innovative in addressing community challenges through compassionate service. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications We welcome candidates who bring a combination of lived experience, professional experience, and a passion for helping others.
Required qualifications include:
High School Diploma or GED Valid Driver's License Professional or educational experience in one or more of the following areas: Homeless services Mental health Peer support Social work Case management Related human services field Preferred Qualifications Case management experience Peer Support Certification
