Job Description

Overview Hazel Pittman Center is seeking a Peer Support Specialist (PSS) to work on-site in the MUSC Chester Emergency Department as part of an innovative warm handoff recovery program. This position provides immediate, in-person support to individuals experiencing substance use-related crises, helping connect them directly to treatment, recovery services, and community resources. This is a unique opportunity to make a direct impact at the point of care and help individuals begin their recovery journey. What You'll Do Engage patients in the Emergency Department using motivational interviewing and SBIRT screening Provide immediate, trauma-informed peer support during crisis situations Facilitate warm handoffs to treatment services, including Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Coordinate referrals to community resources (treatment, housing, transportation, etc.) Advocate for patients and help reduce stigma within the healthcare setting Conduct follow-up outreach within 72 hours after discharge Collaborate with MUSC medical staff, TelePeer providers, and Hazel Pittman Center team Document services and track patient outcomes Skills Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to connect with individuals in crisis Knowledge of recovery principles and community resources Ability to work in a fast-paced hospital environment Compassionate, non-judgmental, and patient-centered approach Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent Must be in sustained recovery (minimum of 3 years preferred) Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) or ability to obtain certification Experience working with individuals with substance use or co-occurring disorders preferred Why Join Us Be part of a life-saving, front-line intervention program Work directly with a hospital and community-based care team Help expand access to treatment and recovery services in a rural community Make a meaningful difference every day Additional Information This position is grant-funded and contingent upon continued funding availability.
