Volunteers and volunteer program support as assigned
Status:
Full-time, Non-Exempt, 32 hours/week Position Summary The Volunteer Coordinator oversees the day-to-day administration, support, and growth of the volunteer program to ensure volunteers are effectively integrated into shelter operations. This position is responsible for volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training coordination, scheduling support, communication, retention, and overall program organization. The Volunteer Coordinator works closely with shelter departments to align volunteer efforts with operational needs while maintaining a positive and professional volunteer experience. Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Coordination ○ Coordinate and support the shelter's volunteer program across assigned departments and functions.
○ Serve as the primary point of contact for active volunteers and volunteer applicants. ○ Maintain strong communication with department leaders to identify volunteer needs, placement opportunities, and scheduling priorities. ○ Support a positive, professional, and mission-driven volunteer culture. ○ Assist with resolving volunteer concerns, questions, and day-to-day issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Volunteer Program Oversight ○ Recruit, screen, onboard, and orient new volunteers in alignment with organizational procedures.
○ Coordinate volunteer training, follow-up, and placement into appropriate roles based on shelter needs and volunteer skillsets. ○ Maintain volunteer schedules, assignments, and participation tracking. ○ Ensure volunteers are properly trained, supported, and utilized in ways that support shelter operations and animal welfare. ○ Monitor volunteer engagement and retention and help identify opportunities to strengthen the program. ○ Assist with volunteer appreciation efforts, recognition, and relationship-building initiatives.
  • Communication & Administrative Support ○ Maintain organized and accurate volunteer records, applications, waivers, training documentation, and communications.
○ Communicate program updates, opportunities, scheduling needs, and expectations to volunteers regularly. ○ Track volunteer activity, participation trends, and program needs for leadership review. ○ Help maintain volunteer materials, program resources, and departmental organization related to volunteer services. ○ Support cross-department coordination to ensure volunteers are integrated effectively and safely into daily operations.
  • Compliance & Best Practices ○ Ensure volunteer activities remain aligned with shelter policies, safety expectations, and animal welfare standards.
○ Reinforce appropriate volunteer boundaries, role expectations, and humane handling practices. ○ Support the development and implementation of SOPs related to volunteer onboarding, training, communication, and program management. ○ Promote consistent, ethical, and mission-driven volunteer engagement practices. Qualifications
  • Experience in volunteer coordination, nonprofit program support, customer service, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in animal welfare or shelter operations preferred.
  • Strong communication, organization, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, schedules, and communications in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong administrative and follow-through skills.
  • Proficiency in shelter software, volunteer platforms, and basic office technology preferred.
This position requires flexibility, professionalism, and strong interpersonal skills in a fast-paced, mission-driven shelter environment. The Volunteer Coordinator is expected to build positive relationships, maintain organized systems, and ensure the volunteer program effectively supports shelter operations while providing a meaningful experience for community members. While work hours are typically full-time, duties may include evening, weekend, and holiday coverage as necessary to support volunteer programming, shelter operations, and special events.
