The position will include assisting a variety of volunteers in their roles, training new volunteers, new volunteer recruitment, accurate record keeping, and direct animal care. $18-$20 per hour Position Description The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Volunteer Services Manager in all aspects of the volunteer program including recruitment, training, scheduling, and communication with all volunteers. Volunteers include individuals, student groups, corporate service groups and other members of the public wanting to donate their time to the Austin Humane Society programs. The Volunteer Coordinator will assist in promoting a positive, cooperative environment and serving as a model of teamwork, initiative, and efficiency at all times. Responsibilities Communication The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for keeping volunteers informed and engaged on what is going on at the shelter and for assuring prompt and appropriate communication between staff and volunteers and among volunteers. This position ensures that volunteers' questions and concerns are responded to in a timely manner and important shelter information is disseminated appropriately. The Volunteer Coordinator serves as a liaison between the volunteers and other staff members, brings concerns to appropriate supervisors, and effectively represents and communicates the mission of the organization to all volunteers. Recruitment, orientation, training and appreciation This position will assist in the recruitment for all volunteer programs in order to fulfill the current needs of the shelter. This position is responsible for providing orientation and coordinating training for all new volunteers on an on-going basis and for facilitating and organizing on-going training opportunities. The Volunteer Coordinator will assist in volunteer appreciation ensuring that volunteers feel supported for their service. This position continually monitors the needs of the shelter and helps to guide the volunteer program through changes as needed. Coordination of volunteers This position will work with the Volunteer Program Manager for the recruitment and scheduling of volunteers both on-site and off-site for adoption events, fundraisers, educational opportunities including shelter tours and school visits, and other community engagements. Volunteers may have varying ability levels, and the volunteer coordinator will be flexible in training and scheduling to ensure the volunteer program is accessible to Austin's diverse population. Community Service Program The Volunteer Coordinator helps to facilitate and develop the Community Service Restitution (CSR) program. This includes but is not limited to providing training, managing time sheets, reporting volunteer hours to court systems or other ordering agencies, and ensuring productivity of volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator continually assesses the needs of the shelter and helps the CSR program evolve as necessary. Customer Service and Relationship Building This position ensures an exemplary experience for all who interact with the Austin Humane Society in any capacity. This includes but is not limited to interactions with volunteers, customers, members of the public, corporate work groups, tour groups, community partners, and donors. This position ensures that volunteers themselves provide exceptional customer service and remain positive and empathetic in all their interactions with the public. Animal Care, Cleaning/Sanitation Up to 40% of daily tasks may consist of direct animal care, including daily cleaning and feeding of animals in the shelter. In the absence or shortage of volunteers, the Volunteer Coordinator may be asked to assist in dog walking and socialization. Animal handling should be done in a way that is both safe and compassionate. Shelter Operations In the absence or shortage of other departmental staff members, the Volunteer Coordinator may be asked to fill in for other operations roles after a period of appropriate cross training. This includes but is not limited to adoption, animal services and foster care, or medical support roles. Other Duties as Assigned Qualifications The ideal candidate for this position will have a minimum of two years of customer services experience. Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent customer service skills, and strong organizational skills. Candidates need to be able to prepare clear and concise reports, develop recruitment and selection procedures, and supervise and train volunteers in order to effectively motivate performance. Candidates need to be able to work independently, possess strong time management skills, and prioritize and handle multiple/ongoing projects. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office programs are required. Previous animal welfare experience preferred.
