In this vital role, you will serve as a compassionate guide and advocate for individuals navigating mental health and recovery from substance and alcohol use. Peer Support Specialist is a person with "lived experience" that is trained and certified, or in the process of obtaining certification, to support those struggling with mental health, psychological trauma, or substance use disorders. Responsibilities Direct Peer Support
  • use the power of peers to support, encourage, model recovery and resilience from substance use disorders and mental health disorders by a) Helping peers identify and remove barriers that prevent them from achieving quality of life.
b) Identify peer needs and refer to internal and external resources as appropriate. c) Provide side-by-side support during peer support services and groups. d) Provide coaching to help promote coping and critical thinking skills to navigate through day-to-day issues. e) Help peers with goal setting to maintain wellness and recovery plans. f) Encourage and help peers socialize during recovery related leisure-time activities. g) Help peers accomplish daily tasks and identify personal strengths and resources that aid in recovery.
    Interventions & Screenings:
    a) Respond to callouts and client emergencies when appropriate and as needed. b) Conduct client screenings as directed and within scope of practice. c) Assisting CORE team with brief interventions and mental health case management
    • Education
    • a) Share lived experiences of recovery and modeling recovery behaviors.
    b) Co-Facilitate evidenced-based treatment groups. c) Facilitate Behavioral Health education classes. d) Educate colleagues about the process of recovery and the use of recovery supportservices. e) Educate family members and other supportive individuals about recovery and recovery supports. f) Educate the public and policy makers, and work to raise awareness.
    • Personal Growth & Development a) Adhere to the Certified Peer Specialist Code of Ethics.
    b) Recognize the limits of their knowledge and seek assistance when needed. c) Use Supervision (mentoring, reflection) effectively by monitoring self and relationships, preparing for meetings and engaging in problem-solving strategies with the supervisor. d) Reflect and examine own personal motivations, judgements, and feelings that may be activated by peer work, recognizes signs of distress, and knowing when to seek support. e) Seek opportunities to increase knowledge and skills of peer support.
    Qualifications:
    Bachelor's degree in psychology, Human Services, or related field b) Have a lived experience with at least one of the following.
    • A mental health condition (in recovery) or substance use condition (in recovery)
    • Is a family member of an individual who is a current or former recipient of addictions or mental health services.
    Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
    a) Enrolled or Certified through the Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals in at least one of the following; § Peer Recovery Support Specialist
    • (PRSS) or Recovery Support Peer Specialist
    • (RSPS) or Mental Health Peer Specialist
    • (MHPS) or Re-Entry Peer Specialist
    • (JI-RPS) or Peer Specialist Supervisor
    • (PSS) or Internationally Certified by IC&RC in Peer Recovery (PR), recognized by Texas Certification Board
    PREFERRED
    Two years of paid or voluntary work experience
    • at least 12-months of consecutive experience (part-time/full time)
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish Skills Strong understanding of behavioral health principles, mental health counseling techniques, and addiction counseling strategies.
    Proven experience in crisis intervention and crisis management, with the ability to remain calm under pressure. Excellent communication skills, including motivational interviewing and active listening. Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams while advocating for client needs. Empathy-driven approach combined with mentoring skills to support clients through their recovery journey. Knowledge of community resources and support networks relevant to mental health and addiction services is a plus.

    From $45,000.00 per year
