Job Description
The Intern position provides students or recent graduates with hands-on experience in local government operations through meaningful project-based work, professional development opportunities, and exposure to public service careers. Interns will support departmental initiatives while developing practical workplace skills, communication abilities, and professional knowledge related to their field of study and career interests. This position is designed to provide valuable learning opportunities while assisting departments with operational, administrative, technical, research, or customer service functions.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assist department staff with daily operations and assigned projects Conduct research, gather data, and prepare reports or presentations Provide administrative support including filing, document preparation, scheduling, and data entry Participate in meetings, trainings, and professional development activities Assist with customer service and communication efforts as appropriate Support special projects and departmental initiatives Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information Follow County policies, procedures, and safety standards Perform other duties as assignedDEPARTMENT-SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
The Culpeper Youth Network functions primarily as the local coordinating body for the Virginia Children's Services Act (CSA), ensuring appropriate services are identified, authorized, and monitored for eligible youth. The department facilitates interagency case management through the Family Assessment and Planning Team (FAPT) process, coordinating with schools, courts, court services unit, community services board, department of social services, and behavioral health providers to develop individualized service plans for youth with serious emotional, behavioral, or educational needs. Culpeper Youth Network manages CSA funding authorization, service utilization, and compliance with state requirements while ensuring least restrictive, community-based services are prioritized. The department also monitors provider performance, supports continuity of care, and ensures fiscal accountability through case reviews, documentation, and data reporting the Community Policy and Management Team (CPMT).QUALIFICATIONS
Interest in youth development, prevention services, behavioral health, or juvenile justice systems.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards when working with sensitive information. Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, multi-disciplinary environment. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Willingness to learn about CSA (Children's Services Act), VJCCCA programming, and community-based services. Dependable, self-motivated, and able to take direction and follow through on assigned tasks.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Current enrollment in technical program, college, or graduate program; or recent graduate within the past 12 months Interest in public service, local government, or related career field Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Basic computer proficiency including Microsoft Office or related software Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional environment Must pass any required background checks per agency and state guidelines.PHYSICAL DEMANDS.
Work is generally performed in an office or professional environment. Some positions may require standing, walking, lifting, or fieldwork, depending on departmental assignment.WORK SCHEDULE & ENVIRONMENT
