Title :
Peer Navigator in the Emergency Department (Peer Specialist) Reports to:
Recover Wyoming Executive Director/Peer Specialist Supervisor Hours :
Full-Time/40 hours per week
SUMMARY:
The Peer Navigator in Emergency Department (Peer Specialist) will work closely within the Emergency Department at Campbell County Health/Ivinson Memorial Hospital and the Wyoming ROOTS team to support patients with opioid and substance use disorders. The Peer Specialist will provide peer coaching and facilitate connection to available community peer support, treatment services, and other wellness services within the hospital and in the community. The Peer Specialist will serve as a positive role model and a connection between people in need of treatment and recovery support services, and the providers and systems equipped to offer those services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide brief intervention in the emergency department for patients who have been screened and identified as having a substance use disorder. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other emergency department personnel to ensure excellent patient care. Participate in all trainings required by Campbell County Health/Ivinson Memorial Hospital & Recover Wyoming. Understand that recovery is voluntary and Peer Specialist services are chosen, not required. Educate and assist patients on how to access treatment, social services, and recovery services. Develop relationships with patients and families in order to assist individuals in the treatment engagement and retention process. Reinforce, guide, and ensure patients and their families that recovery is possible and is built on multiple strengths, coping abilities, and resources of each individual. Use a strengths-based approach with patients to connect in an open, unbiased way to create space for conversations and openings for recovery. Use a person-first language to treat individuals with dignity and respect, opening the possibility for honest communication and optimal support. Assist in establishing and sustaining a social and physical environment supportive of recovery. Enhance identification and participation in the recovery community. Advocate for appropriate and effective community treatment and recovery. Empower patients to make self-determined and self-directed choices about their recovery pathway. Maintain professional/appropriate boundaries with patients to maintain professional provider relationship. Provide post-emergency department telephone or in-person follow-up to assess recovery capital and help the patient navigate the early stages of creating a successful path towards recovery. Maintain organized records and data for each patient encounter. Meet with Peer Specialist supervisor, physician, nursing and social worker teams, and other Wyoming ROOTS team members as instructed, and be responsive to their feedback and requests.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Wyoming IC&RC Certified Peer Specialist Certification (ICPR) or ability to obtain certification within 60 days
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Lived experience in recovery from substance use disorder and/or mental health challenges, with a minimum of 2 years of active and sustained recovery
  • Able to communicate the positive aspects of personal recovery experience and willing to share this experience in a way that would be helpful to others
  • Must honor, support, and accept all pathways to recovery, including medical models which support wellness
  • Basic computer skills, including ability to use Microsoft Office programs such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and ability to operate a copier and scanner
  • Valid Wyoming Driver's License
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Cross-cultural skills and experience with culturally diverse populations
  • Trauma-informed skills and training on mental health first aid and/or suicide prevention or willingness to obtain training
  • Organized and attentive to details
  • Must be up to date on immunizations or willing to receive all immunizations necessary to work in a hospital environment
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
  • 1-2 years of experience working as a Peer Specialist or working with individuals experiencing behavioral health issues
