Substance Abuse Counselor

Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive intake assessments and diagnostic evaluations to determine patient needs and develop tailored treatment plans. Provide individual, group, and family counseling sessions utilizing evidence-based practices such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing. Facilitate crisis intervention and crisis management to support patients experiencing acute mental health or substance use crises. Deliver psychotherapy services addressing addiction, PTSD, mental health disorders, and co-occurring conditions within clinical or community settings. Maintain accurate medical documentation, patient records, and progress notes in compliance with HIPAA regulations and medical terminology standards. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including social workers, case managers, medical professionals, and family members to coordinate care effectively. Utilize research-backed techniques such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) and behavior management strategies to optimize patient outcomes while adhering to ICD coding standards (ICD-9/10). Qualifications Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related field; advanced degrees preferred. Valid licensure or certification as an addiction counselor or mental health professional (e.g., CADC, LCSW, LPC). Proven experience in addiction counseling, clinical counseling, or behavioral health settings. Strong knowledge of psychotherapy modalities including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and group therapy. Familiarity with crisis intervention techniques, trauma-informed care (including PTSD), and home & community care experience. Ability to perform patient assessment, diagnostic evaluation, case management, and data collection effectively. Knowledge of HIPAA regulations, medical documentation standards, medical terminology, ICD coding (ICD-9/10), and CPT coding is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills with the ability to handle crisis situations calmly and professionally.
