Job Description

We are actively seeking Shelter "Kia'i" (the Hawaiian word for "Guardian" or "Caretaker") who really want to make a positive difference in the lives of teens. The Hale Pono Youth Shelter provides a safe sanctuary for youth aged 12-17 who are in need of a safe place to reside for a short period of time (typically 30 days or less). During their stay, they need caring, supportive adults who can guide and encourage them as they move through their day. Previous experience in working with teenagers is preferred. However, we are open to anyone who has a strong motivation to nurture, guide and build resilience in teens, and is open to learning our positive and effective ways of working with youth in supportive ways. Applicants must be able to pass a background check, have driverʻs license, and be (or obtain) a CPR /1st aid certification. Kia'i responsibilities: Assesses to determine if youth is suitable for intake to the shelter Conducts the intake process for youth entering the shelter, including inventory of resident belongings upon admission, orienting youth upon admission and making sure all required forms are signed by youth, legal guardians and agencies as appropriate Encourages and assists with educational programs and tutoring Plan and prepares meals for youth and supervises youth in helping prepare, serve and clean up after meals Supervisies care and maintenance of youth personal belongings, and Supports the care of the facility Encourages good habits of personal hygiene Facilitates groups to discuss daily activities Assists the Director of Programs in determining best plan of care for youth in our shelter Participates in staff training to continually increase skills Maintains awareness of and sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of persons and population served Monitors each child's physical wellbeing, ensuring suitable clothing, adequate food and all required medical treatments, including the dispensing of medication Resolves conflicts using Nonviolent Communication and following policies outlined in Hale Pono Policies and trainings Does regular and consistent shift charting in our electronic record Evaluates and maintains equipment and facility in good condition Evaluates and maintains supply inventory Drives and/or accompanies youth to appointments, school and group activities Assisting in planning and marketing events and researching sustainability and issues of interest to Teran James Young Foundation when youth in school and at night when youth are sleeping Other activities as assigned and not limited to the above description We are an inclusive workplace and encourage BIPOC and LGBTQ Plus persons to apply
