Gwayakochige-Wigamig:
"Making the right choices" (as in the choices Creator would want you to make) Gwayakochige-Wigamig is a cornerstone for intergenerational and community healing. We are committed to ensuring that our Anishinaabe youth and their families have access to their Indigenous rights of community, belonging and cultural identity. Gwayakochige-Wigamig is an Anishinaabe (Indigenous Person) culture-based emergency shelter for at risk Oshkii-ayaa'aag (youth, pl) who may be experiencing houselessness and instabilities due to; runaway status, family crisis, abuse, may be involved with the juvenile corrections and/or child protection system(s). The Emergency Shelter provides culturally based emergency shelter services to youth ages 5 to 17 years old located on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. Services include emergency and short-term shelter, crisis intervention, case and systems advocacy, information and referrals, trauma-informed therapy, access to medical/dental care, cultural advising, counseling, case management and community education. SUMMARY Builds therapeutic relationships and provides intensive supervision of youth that are residing on a temporary basis at the Gwayakochige-Wigamig - The Red Lake Youth Shelter. Oshkaabewisag (Advocates) will supervise and work with youth between the ages 5-17. The position will require working in an office/shelter setting that is open 24 hours and 365 days a year. This position requires on-site staffing for 3 shifts; day shift, evening shift and overnight shifts. Oshkaabewisag will provide general shelter oversight to ensure safety of the youth, establish and promote shelter programing. The Oshkaabewisag will cooperate with the Gwayakochige-Wigamig Case Manager to assist the youth in achieving housing stability, recovery from complex trauma, setting and reaching personal goals, family reunification and/or independent self-sufficiency.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES ON-SITE
  • This position is primarily responsible for providing culturally responsive psychological evaluation and treatment for Native American adults within the scope of specialty and training.
The licensed mental health professional provides regular clinical supervision and administrative oversight to the Youth Advocate Support Worker, Mental Health Targeted Case Manager, Community Health Worker, and Clinical Intern/Trainee(s)
  • Provide psychological evaluation and individual and group therapy to Native American youth (5-17years of age) (in-person and via telehealth)
  • Provide clinical supervision and administrative oversight to Clinical Intern/Trainee(s), Mental Health Targeted Case Management, Community Health Work, and Youth Advocate Support Staff.
  • Provides treatment based on records, interviews, behavioral observations, and collateral.
  • Abides by clinical protocols, policies, and procedures; suggests improvements over time.
  • Complies with the productivity goals of the clinic.
  • Coordinates care with internal and external providers and makes referrals as necessary.
  • Records treatment and coordination in EHR in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintains knowledge of current and culturally responsive mental health care practices.
  • Ensure appropriate training for all staff, including CPR, First Aid, Blood-borne Pathogens, Child and Vulnerable Adult Maltreatment reporting confidentiality, and regular in-service training on other issues surrounding homelessness.
  • Monitors staff work performance and productivity.
  • Conduct regular and special staff meetings as needed.
  • Maintain communication with the Director, attend monthly Board meetings as needed, provide requested reports, and implement policy and other Board decisions.
  • Directly supervises master's level interns, mental health case managers, community health workers, and youth advocates support workers.
  • Must obtain a Master's Degree (M.A. or higher).
  • Direct experience providing clinical supervision preferred.
  • Currently Licensed Mental Health Professional Certifications (LICSW, LMFT, LP, LPCC)
  • Be a part of decision making during screening team and processes.
OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES
  • Provide services applying strengths-based, positive youth development, harm reduction and youth-centered approaches to young people who are experiencing; crisis, homelessness, addiction, abuse, exploitation, self-harm and any other adversities that affect overall well-being.
  • Develop healthy and supportive relationships with youth while maintaining professional boundaries; demonstrate kindly assertiveness in setting limits with youth.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings to discuss program participants and provide progress updates; attend Gwayakochige-Wigamig staff and program meetings, quarterly reviews, cultural teachings and trainings and other trainings as indicated.
  • Provide coverage of program participants while they are engaged with activities, including outings, to ensure rules are upheld for the safety and well-being of all youth and staff; assist with other Gwayakochige-Wigamig program coverage as necessary.
  • Participate in trainings and professional development sufficient for the provision of best practice services for youth who have experiencing; crisis, homelessness, addiction, abuse, exploitation, self-harm and any other adversities that affect overall well-being.
  • Participate in educational trainings that further the skill set and understanding of youth such as; child development, trauma informed care, de-escalation methods, harm reduction, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION
: Must obtain a Master's Degree (M.A. or higher). Direct experience providing clinical supervision preferred. Currently Licensed Mental Health Professional Certifications (LICSW, LMFT, LP, LPCC)
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Knowledge of child development, family dynamics, and Anishinaabe child rearing
  • Demonstrates the understanding of our community and how we value our children.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with high-barrier populations (mental health, chemical dependency, homelessness, domestic violence, sexual exploitation, child protection, abuse, at-risk youth.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to work effectively with youth with a variety of identities, cultures, and backgrounds including ethnic/racial minorities and LGBTQ youth. Effective communications skills that supports creating a strong rapport with youth. Skilled at reading non-verbal cues of others.
  • Knowledge of the variety of Minnesota Indigenous tribes and their communities, cultures and traditions.
  • Knowledge of all the systems that involve and impact Indigenous youth.
  • Skilled de-escalation, harm reduction and conflict resolution methods. Knowledge of child development. Passionate about the good of our community and safety of young people, and the empowerment of families.
  • Proficient communication skills to advocate for the youth in team settings, community, and other external capacities that involve youth.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: mental health, chemical dependency, emotional/behavioral special education, at-risk youth issues, trafficking.
  • Knowledge of/interest in learning trauma informed, victim-centered, culturally appropriate work with youth who are victims of violence and sexual exploitation.
  • Skilled in active listening, engagement, and building rapport with youth and families.
  • Ability to learn cultural ways and ceremonial ways of Anishinabek.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentially and ethics.
  • Demonstrate the ability to prioritize issues based on immediacy, urgency, critical nature and handle complex, emergent situations.
  • Ability to navigate electronic records independently.
  • Ability to maintain self-care, be self-aware and self-regulate.
  • Ability to ask for assistance when experiencing secondary worker trauma. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Ability to pass criminal and background check
  • Must be 21 years of age and older
  • Valid Minnesota Driver's License and proof of auto insurance
  • Adult CPR and Basic First Aid
  • Ability to pass drug screening and remain free from substance abuse issues during employment.
  • Willing to obtain and apply training and education that is applicable to working with youth; trauma informed care, suicide awareness/prevention, harm reduction, child development, de-escalation methods, etc.
