Job Description

Category Schools - Special Education Teacher Job Type Contract Step into a rewarding contract opportunity supporting students in a specialized, close-knit setting near Schenectady, NY. This position spans July 2026 through June 2027 and is tailored for educators passionate about making a difference for students with intensive needs. With both Middle and High School classroom openings, you'll be instrumental in shaping an inclusive, adaptive learning environment for approximately 78 students within 10 self-contained classrooms—all operating with an 8:1:3 staff-to-student ratio to maximize individualized support. You'll work from 7:45 am to 3:15 pm, Monday through Friday. While planning periods are not built into the day, up to 40 hours weekly, including approved additional time to complete essential paperwork, prepare IEPs, or modify lesson plans, will be supported.
Desired Experience & Qualifications:
NY State licensure in Special Education (Students with Disabilities) or actively working toward certification. Recent graduates and those transferring an out-of-state license are welcome. Strong preference for hands-on experience supporting level 3 autism, severe cognitive disabilities, significant behavioral needs, or students reliant on alternative communication and medical supports. Familiarity with alternative assessments and adapting curriculum for a wide range of abilities highly encouraged.

Deliver instruction in a self-contained setting, adapting lesson plans for individualized student needs. Implement IEP goals, document progress, and create tailored supports for non-verbal learners. Foster a positive, structured classroom culture for students with diverse and intensive support needs. Collaborate with paraprofessionals, specialists, and families to ensure holistic, student-centered learning.
