Staff Accountant

Job Description Position Summary The Staff Accountant is responsible for performing general accounting functions including journal entries, account reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and month-end closing procedures. This position supports the accounting department in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting principles, and providing financial analysis for transportation operations. The role requires strong analytical skills and knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Essential Functions and Responsibilities Primary Duties General Ledger Management Prepare and post journal entries for various business transactions Maintain chart of accounts and ensure proper account coding Perform monthly account reconciliations for balance sheet accounts Research and resolve account discrepancies and variances Assist with general ledger maintenance and cleanup activities Month-End and Year-End Procedures Execute month-end closing procedures according to established timeline Prepare accrual and deferral entries for accurate financial reporting Assist in preparation of monthly financial statements Support external audit procedures and provide requested documentation Participate in year-end closing and audit preparation activities Accounts Payable and Receivable Support Review and process vendor invoices and expense reports Assist with accounts receivable analysis and aging review Perform three-way matching for purchase orders, receipts, and invoices Support collections efforts through account analysis and documentation Maintain vendor master file and payment terms Fixed Assets and Depreciation Maintain fixed asset register and tracking records Calculate and record monthly depreciation entries Process fixed asset additions, disposals, and transfers Coordinate with operations for asset verification and inventory Ensure compliance with capitalization policies Financial Analysis and Reporting Prepare various financial and operational reports for management Analyze revenue and expense trends by business unit or customer Support budget preparation and variance analysis Assist with cash flow analysis and forecasting Provide ad hoc financial analysis as requested Secondary Duties Support sales tax preparation and compliance activities Maintain supporting documentation for financial transactions Participate in process improvement and system implementation projects Cross-train in other accounting functions as needed Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required Minimum 2-3 years of general accounting experience Transportation industry experience preferred Technical Skills Proficient in QuickBooks or similar accounting software Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and financial modeling Experience with ERP systems preferred Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) Understanding of internal controls Core Competencies Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities Excellent attention to detail and accuracy Effective written and verbal communication skills Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities Strong organizational and time management skills Professional demeanor and ability to maintain confidentiality
