Job Description Long Island Explorium, Port Jefferson, NY The Long Island Explorium is looking to hire two STEM educators . The position is part-time , with afternoons and weekends included, and has the potential to expand into a full-time position. Educators will be trained to teach the programs offered by the Long Island Explorium but are encouraged to use their unique talents and skills to present those programs to the K-8 audiences they will encounter.

Accepted on a rolling basis until position is filled About the Long Island Explorium Children's Science Museum The Long Island Explorium plays a vital role on Long Island as a lighthouse of enriching STEM programs that foster inventive thinking and serve as a catalyst for empowerment. The Explorium seeks to support and develop the next generation of creative thinkers and problem solvers. Our curriculum, exhibits, and educational approach are unique by design, developed to spark inventive solutions, build confidence by embracing the "fail forward" concept, and foster teamwork through hands-on workshops and activities that pose challenges with multiple outcomes or solutions. Because of this focus on creativity and innovation, the Explorium is recognized as Long Island's Family Maker Space , a place for families to play, create, build, and grow together. Our educators have a background in science and/or education, committed to promoting the interactive, engaging constructivist learning pedagogy the Long Island Explorium has utilized for over fifteen years, with a special interest in ensuring equitable access to education for all. Responsibilities and Duties Educators will be trained to teach the programs offered by the Long Island Explorium but are encouraged to use their unique talents and skills to present those programs to the K-8 audiences they will encounter. All programming features hands-on activities and spans all fields of science, especially engineering design, life sciences, and technology . The Long Island Explorium is located in the picturesque Village of Port Jefferson and has three demonstration gardens, including native plants, rain gardens, and sensory gardens , that are used frequently for outdoor programs and exploration of marine life. Part-time staff will be assigned to: Programming both onsite and offsite Teaching afterschool workshops Weekend programming Scout badges Birthday parties Family workshops Educators are also encouraged to develop new and exciting lessons, activities, and projects in all programming and work collaboratively with leadership and the Board to promote the engaging and enriching environment the Science Museum is known for. Qualifications and Skills Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and/or education is required Experience working with elementary-aged children, preferably in an educational setting Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with groups and parents Ideal candidates are organized and work well independently or as part of a team A friendly, creative, and upbeat attitude is required to carry out the Long Island Explorium's mission to deliver an educational, engaging, and enjoyable learning experience Requirements Part-time availability must include weekday and one weekend shifts , typically 1:00 to 5:00 PM Scheduling may vary based on programming and event needs Flexible availability for holidays and special events is required Background checks will be completed on all employees How to Apply Please submit your resume and cover letter to jobs@longislandexplorium.org .
