Essential Elements:
Print Duties listed below are representative of this classification but not all positions incorporate all tasks. Duties will vary somewhat among positions. Incumbents are assigned to a teacher or administrator of a special education program and may also assist students in mainstream classes. Provide instruction, as directed by a teacher, to individuals or small groups in a variety of areas including cognitive, gross and fine motor skills, feeding skills, self-help skills and behavior control, music and art to students experiencing various physical and learning handicaps; assist students arriving and leaving classrooms by wheeling chairs; positioning and repositioning students and medical equipment as appropriate; assist teachers in maintaining the health and safety of special education students by being aware of the environment and the potential hazards of each students actions; assisting the teacher according to established guidelines and procedures; serve lunch and feed students with severe eating problems and monitor self feeding students as directed by a teacher; take appropriate action when students have difficulty while eating; assist students with personal hygiene; wash hands and faces; monitor individual toilet training schedules, change clothing as needed; assist students with braces and other mechanical apparatus; monitor and observe student conduct and utilize approved behavior management techniques to redirect inappropriate behaviors; assist speech and adaptive P.E. specialist with motor development activities that may include body movement, stretching and swimming; administer first aid and CPR as needed to students with chronic and acute medical problems; assist teacher in maintaining a variety of records including student data sheets and graphs of student progress; assist in monitoring and reporting behavior changes and seizure activity as directed; prepare, maintain, set up and take down instructional material and bulletin boards as directed by the teacher; assist students getting on and off the bus, including students in wheelchairs; with walker, accompany medically involved students on the bus as assigned; may participate in parent conferences if requested; should incorporate behavior and safety.

Under general supervision, to assist, tutor, and educate students individually or in groups in a classroom or similar learning situation, following a prescribed curriculum; to oversee and supervise students; to perform clerical and paraprofessional work both outside and in the classroom, and to do related work as may be required. (a) A high school diploma or equivalent is required (b) Pass the BPUSD district instructional aide examination (c) Or completion of at least two years of study at an institution of higher education or an associate's degree or higher in lieu of taking the BPUSD exam (must provide proof)
REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.
