Job Description

Gales Creek Camp for kids with diabetes (just outside of Portland) is looking for passionate individuals interested in a career in food service.

First day of work: June 16Last day of work: August 8Under the supervision of our passionate chef, over a 7-week period we serve over 9,000 meals! To pull this off, each summer we hire 3-5 kitchen staff to help make all the magic.

We especially love to hire people with a passion for food and a passion for learning.

Candidates must be at least 16 years old, but our ideal candidate is someone who is out of high school and interested in going into food service.

The season is about 7.5 weeks during the summer. We pay a stipend (between $3,563 - $4,125 for the summer, DOE) and provide onsite housing and all meals. Kitchen staff get the time between meals and the weekends off.

Kitchen staff live in bunk housing, sharing a room with at least one other staff member. Must be a good roommate with a positive attitude and good hygiene habits.

Must be able to pass a national background check and provide references.

PS. In case you don't know, type 1 diabetes is the autoimmune form of diabetes that used to be called "juvenile diabetes" because people are mostly diagnosed as kids. In a nutshell, kids with type 1 can't produce insulin, and they have to inject artificial insulin throughout the day. They calculate the amount of insulin by counting the carbs in their food. We have doctors, nurses, and a dietitian onsite who help with this.
Qualifications:
Minimum age: 16 years.

Washington County Foods Handlers certification. Previous cooking experience or experience supervising children preferred.

Desire to live and work in a camp community.

Must be able to lift and move materials weighing up to 50. Must be able to remain on feet for extended periods (up to 4 hours per shift).
Essential Function:
The Nutrition Assistant supports daily food service operations by preparing and serving meals and snacks in a safe, timely, and sanitary manner. This role requires working cooperatively with other kitchen staff in a fast-paced environment under the supervision of the Food Service Director, while maintaining clear and respectful communication. The Nutrition Assistant also plays an important role in the camp community by creating a positive, welcoming environment for campers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Follows the directions of the Food Service Director or Assistant Food Service Director in preparing meals and snacks, and maintaining the kitchen/dining hall clean and free of hazards. Prepares the Dining Hall for meals: set the tables, restock table supplies, prepare and set the salad and drink bar.

Serves meals and snacks according to pre-determined serving portions.

Stands and walks for extended periods throughout the workday.

Lifts, carries, pushes, or pulls items. Bends, kneels, reaches, and performs repetitive motions.

Assist campers with separating plastic and silverware after meals.

Builds positive relationships with campers and fellow staff.

Communicates clearly and respectfully.

Maintains confidentiality of all medical information regarding campers and staff.

Follows all camp policies, rules,and regulations.

Participates in mid-summer and end of camp evaluations.

Participates in the end of meal clean up including salad bar, drink area, leftovers and general clean up in the kitchen and dininghall.

Arrives on time.

Consistently follows Washington County Food Handler Guidelines.

Signs out with the Camp Director when leaving camp. (No Exceptions)Other duties to further the Gales Creek Camp mission and outcomes of Gales Creek Camp, as assigned.
