OVERVIEW
At Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp (MHKC), we're on a mission to help empower children and adults with developmental disabilities through equitable access to the outdoors and recreation. Our primary program is Summer Camp, occurring from June to August and serving over 500 individuals with developmental disabilities at our 22-acre campsite in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Campers have varying abilities and needs, with counselors and staff supporting activities of daily living including personal care, mobility, communication, dining, behavior management, socialization, and activity engagement. We offer a variety of accessible and adaptable activities ranging from an adventure course and horses to swimming, biking, and hiking. Summer Camp isn't just fun; it creates profound and transformative experiences, fosters skills development, and builds a strong sense of community. This experience is not just for our campers, but our dedicated counselors and staff too. At Camp, staff develop and practice a variety of transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, leadership, creativity, collaboration, and professionalism. Joining the Mt. POSITION SUMMARY
At MHKC, the Camp Nurse plays a pivotal role in ensuring the health and safety of all campers, volunteers, staff, and guests. Collaborating with a dedicated team of Nurses who form the Health Care Team, this position oversees camper health and medical reviews during check-in, administers camper medications, provides general first aid and health care, and promptly responds to medical emergencies. Serving as a Camp Nurse offers a unique opportunity to step away from the clinical setting and immerse oneself in nature on Mt. Hood, contribute to a vibrant and joyful camper experience, and make a meaningful difference in empowering our campers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1.
Provide Comprehensive Health Care:
a. Deliver health care services in a team to meet the needs of campers, volunteers, and staff, managing approximately 64 campers with developmental disabilities and up to 120 live-in staff and volunteers weekly. Each Camp Nurse is assigned to approximately 20-30 campers each week. b. Collaborate with the Health Care Team to address the camp's medical requirements. c. Share responsibility for overnight care on a rotating basis, with other nursing staff, as needed. d. Lead or assist with general health and medical considerations such as seizure response, diabetic monitoring, thickening liquids and pureed foods, bowel protocols, etc. 2.
Conduct Medical Screening:
a. Perform thorough medical screenings during the check-in process, evaluating general health and conducting necessary tests upon arrival. b. Identify any signs of illness or communicable diseases and promptly report to the Lead Nurse. c. Review and verify health history, physician examination, medications, and emergency authorization with parents/guardians/campers. Logging any and all medications and doses, over-the-counter and prescriptions. 3.
Maintain Accurate Medical Records:
a. Ensure meticulous maintenance of medical records (MARs, parental contact log, treatment logs), in compliance with Oregon State and American Camp Association Standards. b. Keep camper health histories, physician's exams, and daily medical logs up-to-date and readily accessible. c. Handle medical information dissemination to staff members strictly on a need-to-know basis. d. Document health-related communications with parents/guardians and Lead Nurse. 4.
Manage Nurse Station and Equipment/Supplies:
a. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the Nurse's Station and all health-related equipment. b. Report equipment or supply needs promptly to the Lead Nurse. c. Keep first aid and personal hygiene products well stocked and ensure proper storage of all medication, both over-the-counter and prescription. 5. Collaborate with Staff on
Health-Related Matters:
a. Educate staff on individual campers' specific needs, as required, such as recognizing signs of illness or injury, proper first aid techniques, seizure response, and allergic reactions. b. Delegate tasks to staff as needed per nursing practice standards. c. Maintain open lines of communication with designated staff regarding camper health concerns, medical needs, any changes in health status, or food allergies. 6. Engage in
Collaborative Problem Solving:
a. Work closely with the Lead Nurse, PD/APD, or Leadership Team, as needed. b. Report any significant health problems or symptoms of illness promptly to the Lead Nurse & PD/APD. c. Collaborate on determining appropriate action for individuals requiring medical attention or potential dismissal. d. Address camper concerns, distinguish between medical and behavioral concerns, and follow the established chain of command and crisis plan. 7. Exhibit Professionalism and Adherence to
Policies:
a. Adhere strictly to all MHKC policies and procedures. b. Foster a positive and productive work environment through effective communication and collaboration with supervisors and colleagues. c. Fulfill any other duties as assigned. d. Consistently represent MHKC in a positive and professional manner.

DESIRED ABILITIES, SKILLS, & EXPERIENCE
Have a passion for or desire to learn and work with individuals with developmental disabilities. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, campers, and families. Demonstrate strong time management skills, professionalism, attention to detail, and collaboration abilities. Model perspective-taking, patience, sound judgment, and discretion, while maintaining a positive attitude, particularly during moments of camper support, high-stress situations, or instances of miscommunication. Experience as a Camp Nurse is preferred, but not required. Ability to support campers in their Activities of Daily Living, including transfers, dressing, showing, toileting, and feeding.
REQUIREMENTS
Registered Nurse (RN) with an Oregon license as required by Oregon state law. Active Nurse Liability Insurance (or willing to obtain) Pass a background check per MHKC, American Camp Association (ACA), and Department of Human Services (DHS) guidelines. CPR/AED/First Aid Certification from an ACA approved certifying body (or wiling to obtain) Complete all required training, online and in-person. Live on property Monday-Saturday in designated all-gender nurse housing. Commitment to maintain a drug and alcohol-free environment, including recreational and medicinal cannabis. Ability to transport self to and from Camp. Carpooling or drop-off is recommended and encouraged. Contribute to a positive and healthy Camp culture and environment, committing to caring for the community and property.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working hours can range from 7:00AM-11:00PM with rotating breaks throughout each day. Camp is very active, with individuals moving inconsistently up to 5-10 miles a day. Some duties of this position are performed outdoors, and employees may be exposed to variable weather elements, temperatures, insects, and/or animals. Employees may encounter bodily fluids and/or blood-borne pathogens, requiring strict adherence to protocols designed to minimize any potential exposure. All buildings and areas at Camp are tobacco/vape-free except for one designated area on-site.
Pay:
$1,650.00 per week
