Job Description

Summer HRT Student Researcher (NSF Grant) Bridgewater State University, United States about 6 hours ago
Location:
Bridgewater, MASSACHUSETTS
Deadline:
30 Jun 2026 Posting Details Position Information Title Summer HRT Student Researcher (NSF Grant) Position Description The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports science and engineering in all 50 states and U.S. territories. This position supports undergraduate summer research in mathematics as part of an NSF-funded project in abstract, applied, and computational harmonic analysis. Students may work on one of two research directions: 1. One project focuses on the classification problem for five-interval wavelet sets. This includes computational and theoretical work related to finite unions of intervals that tile the real line under both translation and dilation. Possible tasks include building a web-based visualization tool for candidate wavelet sets, testing geometric tiling conditions, exploring examples computationally, and assisting with classification work through computation, pattern detection, symbolic experimentation, and mathematical reasoning. 2. A second project focuses on a four-point subproblem related to the HRT Conjecture. This work combines advanced mathematical reading with the use of large language models and the Lean proof assistant to help organize, formalize, and verify mathematical arguments. Students in this direction will contribute to a careful workflow at the interface of abstract mathematics, symbolic logic, and computation. Preferred Qualifications We are especially interested in strong undergraduate students who are mathematically mature, reliable, creative, and excited to work on challenging open problems. Preference will be given to students with strength in proof-based mathematics. Some computational or programming experience is helpful, though not required for every aspect of the work. Students interested in the HRT project should be willing to learn formal proof methods and work carefully with symbolic and computational tools. Relevant backgrounds may include real analysis, abstract algebra, harmonic analysis, number theory, mathematical computing, formal methods, theoretical computer science, and scientific writing.
