Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
Functions in surgery in the following capacities: Scrubs in with the Surgeon during procedures. Will assist in the transportation and positioning of patients. Performs general maintenance and care of the department and equipment. Will clean, process and store processed supplies and equipment. Orders supplies as needed.PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS
Essential Function1. Performs duties in a friendly, professional manner. a. Behaviors and actions while at work promote a professional, friendly, and functional department.2. Works with the surgeon as "scrub" according to prescribed standards.a. Scrubs, gown and gloves in accordance with performance standards.b. Sets up table, instruments and supplies according to type of operation.c. Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative areas as needed.d. Actively participates in the "Time Out" process just prior to the beginning of the procedure.e. Assists and anticipates the needs of the surgeon, ie: instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies, according to technique, procedure and special requirements.f. Maintains a correct count of sponges, needles and instruments with the circulating nurse and reports correctness and / or discrepancies per the standard procedure.g. Separates all sponges fully during the count process, and counts in a manner that is conducive for the Circulating RN to see each item counted, as well. h. Maintains aseptic technique at all times as directed by accepted standards.i. Assists in application of dressings, casts and in moving of the patient as needed.j. Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, and supplies and cleans the room as directed by procedure.3. Participates in emergency situations as required.a. Responds immediately and efficiently to emergency situations.b. Maintains calm demeanor in emergency situations.c. Covers "On-call" shifts for after-hours emergencies, according to the posted "on-call" schedule.d. Arrives within 60 minutes after being called for an after-hours emergency procedure.4. Transports patients to the surgical unit when requested.a. Checks the patient's name and date of birth on the ID band, and verifies correct patient ID, before transporting.b. Transports patients to the surgical unit safely as requested.c. Uses proper body mechanics when transporting patients to protect the patient and self.5. Assists the Surgeon and Nursing Staff with patient positioning.6. Maintains a sufficient amount of supplies on the surgery unit.a. Inventories unit supplies to maintain sufficient supplies on the surgery unit.b. Rotates supplies following department's established procedure.c. Rotates and checks sterility expiration dates and condition of non-disposal instruments and instrument trays.d. Following departmental schedule, checks inventory and replenishes items as needed.e. Pulls "outdated" supplies, as assigned.7. Processes supplies by cleaning, packaging, sterilizing and storing in accordance with established departmental proceduresa. Cleans, sterilizes and assembles equipment, supplies and instruments.b. Inspects equipment to ensure integrity and safety. Follows through on facilitating repairs as needed.c. Keeps accurate records regarding autoclave loads, sterility date, pressure, and temperature, and biological indicators.d. Other required records are accurate and completed in a timely manner8. Understands the safe use of equipment used in Sterile Processing.a. Demonstrates safe use of all equipment used in department; Steam sterilizer, Low temperature Sterilizer, Washer Decontaminator, Flexible Scope Processor, etc.9. Understands all aspects of aseptic technique.a. Demonstrates ability to prepare, assemble and package equipment and supplies using aseptic technique.b. Rotates sterile supplies; removes outdated supplies.c. Stores sterile equipment on assigned shelves as per department policy.10. Understands Infection Control guidelines for sterile processing.a. Follows established policies and procedures of the Infection Control Committee when handling infectious waste.b. Follows recommended infection control policies and procedures during working hours.11. Records changes in tray content or inventory of supplies.a. Notifies appropriate staff of changes in tray content or inventory supplies.b. Updates tray description files; changes file location sheets and control sheets as needed.12. Attends staff meetings and in-service programs.a. Attends mandatory staff meetings and in-service programs.b. Obtains information from meetings unable to attend13. Assists in housekeeping duties and cleanliness of the department as directed to insure safe patient environment.a. When necessary, cleans rooms, furniture, equipment and suites.b. Maintains traffic control through use of prescribed areas and corridors.c. Assists in maintenance of instruments and supplies by proper cleaning, care, utilization and sterilizations as directed.d. Maintains awareness of safety hazards and use of equipment to prevent damage or harm to personnel and patients.14. Gathers, disseminates and communicates pertinent information.a. Completes clinical assignment in a timely fashion including maintenance of equipment and supplies necessary for provision of patient care through next shift.b. Completes non-clinical assignments, tasks and projects within a pre-established agreed upon time frame.c. Prioritizes workload relative to patient care needs.d. Participates in nursing unit goal setting.e. Participates in committee work as requested.15. Facilitates mentoring, training, and fills the Preceptor role as is necessary for new Surgical Technicians.16. Helps out in the Pre-Op and Post-Op areas when assigned.17.
