The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) Director is a full-time leadership position integral to the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit within a Level I Trauma Center. We are seeking a board-certified Trauma/Acute Care Surgeon with demonstrated experience and leadership capabilities in Surgical Critical Care to oversee the Surgical ICU while also serving as a Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (ACS) attending physician. This dual-role position combines administrative and clinical leadership responsibilities as SICU Director with active participation in trauma and acute care surgery services, including call coverage. Position Responsibilities The SICU Director will provide clinical, administrative, and operational leadership for the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
Responsibilities include:
Ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based critical care services Promoting patient safety, quality outcomes, and continuous performance improvement initiatives Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across surgical, nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and ancillary services Developing and implementing SICU protocols, policies, and best practices Supporting compliance with accreditation, regulatory, and trauma verification standards Overseeing physician and staff education, mentorship, and professional development activities Participating in departmental and hospital leadership initiatives Providing direct patient care within the SICU and Trauma/ACS services Participating in Trauma and Acute Care Surgery call schedules Required Qualifications Board Certified or Board Eligible in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Surgical Critical Care, preferably within a Level I or Level II Trauma Center Demonstrated leadership experience in a Surgical ICU or critical care environment Eligibility for medical licensure and hospital privileges in the applicable state Preferred Qualifications Special expertise in Surgical Critical Care demonstrated through active membership, participation, or leadership in national and/or regional critical care, trauma, or surgical organizations Active involvement in professional societies related to trauma, acute care surgery, or surgical critical care Experience with quality improvement, performance metrics, and multidisciplinary program development Additional Requirements Willingness and availability to participate in Trauma and Acute Care Surgery call coverage Strong communication, leadership, and team collaboration skills Commitment to academic, educational, and quality improvement initiatives within a trauma and critical care environment
