Job Title:
Surveyor / Instrument OperatorJob Description This role supports a consulting land surveying firm as an instrument operator and rodman on two-person survey crews. You will perform field layout projects with a strong focus on utilities and topographic surveying for projects located in Seattle and areas to the north. The position offers a clear path to grow into a party chief role for someone who wants to advance their surveying career. Responsibilities + Operate survey instruments and equipment as an instrument operator and rodman on a two-person survey crew. + Perform topographic surveying and topographic mapping for a variety of field projects, with a strong focus on utility layout and related work. + Use Trimble GPS and total station equipment to collect accurate field data for land surveys, boundary surveys, and construction-related surveys. + Assist in preparing and verifying topographic maps and survey drawings based on collected field data. + Support boundary survey work by accurately collecting and documenting field measurements and observations. + Follow established survey procedures to ensure precision, consistency, and quality in all survey tasks. + Coordinate electronically with the office and follow advanced dispatch instructions to travel directly to assigned project sites. + Work on long-distance topographic projects, including multi-mile segments, maintaining accuracy and efficiency over large areas. + Collaborate closely with your crew partner to plan daily tasks, manage equipment, and complete assigned survey work on schedule. + Communicate clearly with team members and office staff regarding project status, field conditions, and any issues encountered on site. + Adhere to safety practices in the field, including safe operation of survey equipment and awareness of site conditions. + Contribute to a positive, team-oriented environment by acting professionally and responsibly with minimal supervision. Essential Skills + 2-5 years of land surveying experience as an instrument operator, rodman, or chainman on survey crews. + 2-5 years of experience performing topographic surveying and topographic mapping. + 2-5 years of experience operating survey instruments, including total stations and related field equipment. + Hands-on experience working on survey crews performing topographic surveys, boundary surveys, and construction-related surveys. + Ability to operate Trimble GPS or similar survey-grade GPS equipment in the field. + Proficiency with land surveying practices, including survey crew operations, data collection, and field layout. + Understanding of topography, topographic maps, and ALTA and land survey concepts. + Capability to read, interpret, and follow survey instructions, plans, and layouts for field work. + Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in measurements and documentation. + Ability to work early-morning shifts and travel regularly to project sites in Seattle and areas to the north. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Preferred 2-5 years of experience specifically with Trimble equipment. + Experience with boundary survey software or related survey software tools. + Experience managing or leading survey crews is a plus but not required. + Interest in growing into a party chief role and taking on greater responsibility over time. + Strong communication skills for coordinating electronically with office staff and field teams. + Self-directed work style with the ability to function effectively without micromanagement. Work Environment The role is based out of an office in Lynnwood, with most field projects located in Seattle and to the north. Survey crews work in pairs and typically start their day between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m., traveling directly from home to job sites based on advanced electronic dispatch and scheduling. Communication and dispatching are handled electronically, reducing the need to report to the office before heading to the field. The team operates in a laid-back, tight-knit environment where leadership trusts crews to act responsibly and does not micromanage day-to-day activities. The group is long-tenured, collaborative, and supportive, creating a stable and friendly atmosphere. The firm has recently been awarded 50 miles of topographic work, providing a steady pipeline of field projects and strong opportunities for continued employment and professional growth. The position includes benefits such as six paid holidays and 80 hours of paid time off. Field work involves regular use of Trimble GPS, total stations, and other survey instruments in outdoor environments across various project sites. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lynnwood, WA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $32.00/hr.
