Box 500 City Elmira State NY Zip Code 14901 Duties Description Teachers utilize professional training and experience to plan lessons and curriculums and instruct and evaluate the performance and progress of individuals• in an academic or commercial subject area. Such subject areas are in fields recognized by the New York State Department of Education. Incumbents of these positions work with diverse groups of individuals that have broad ranges of social and academic backgrounds, interests, physical and/or developmental disabilities, and/or mental illness. Positions are classified in agencies with formal education programs, such as the Office of Children and Family Services, Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, and Office of Mental Health. •Individual refers to a person who is being treated or cared for, and is used in place of patient, client, or other nomenclature specific to an agency. certificate will be considered a loss of certification and will result in termination of employment. •If you apply for the Elementary School Subjects examination(s), you must possess New York State Certification in one of the following: Childhood Education (Grades 1-6); Pre Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Grades 1-6; Nursery, Kindergarten & Grades 1-6; Common Branch Subjects (1-6); or Early Childhood Education (Birth -2) and Childhood Education (1-6) •If you apply for the High School Equivalency Preparation examination(s), you must possess New York State Certification in one of the following: English Language Arts 7-12, Mathematics 7-12, Social Studies 7-12, Reading, Literacy, Biology 7-12, Earth Science 7-12, Chemistry 7-12, and/or Physics 7-12. If you are considered for appointment as a Teacher (Spanish Language), you will be required to demonstrate your Spanish language proficiency at a level that will ensure your ability to perform properly the duties of the position. Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date, it is expected employees hired underNY HELPS
will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in anNY HELPS
title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified. Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.
