Qualifications:
•Two or four-year degree, or two years of college (60 semester hours), or passing score on Praxis Parapro Assessment, required •Experience working with four-year-olds, preferred
Performance Responsibilities:
1.Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher 2.Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities 3.Assists instructional staff in the preparation and adaptation of instructional materials for the purpose of providing activities and materials that facilitate student learning and performance 4.Assists students by using behavioral strategies, positive reinforcements, social stories, peer facilitation and peer training for the purpose of teaching appropriate social behaviors in accordance with students' social and behavioral learning goals 5.Assists with behavioral support plans, which may include physical restraint of a student, after receiving training from a certified crisis intervention instructor 6.Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes 7.Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher 8.Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips 9.Checks agendas and assists with writing homework assignments 10.Accompanies student to and from classes, if needed 11.Assists student in small groups or individually as directed by teacher 12.Transports student to and from cars or buses 13.Assist with student testing 14.Assists teacher in the instruction of daily living routines such as personal hygiene, toileting, dressing, self-feeding, drinking, etc. 15. Assists with physical health programs for students which include such activities as physical therapy, assisting students with exercise, stretching, walking, etc., if applicable 16.If applicable, assists students with physical tasks such as putting on and taking off outer wear, moving from room to room, eating, getting on and off school buses, lifts and places students in and out of special needs equipment, and/or assists student with eating 17.If applicable, assists students with all toiletry needs and diaper changes 18.Assists with and reinforces speech therapy lessons, if applicable 19.If needed, adjusts special equipment for students use 20.Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher 21.Participates in in-service training programs as assigned 22.Ensures the safety of students in the classroom 23.Is aware of, and adheres to, students' IEPs and individual accommodations 24.Maintains confidentiality of student personally identifiable data 25.Completes required daily documentation 26.Performs other duties as assigned
Essential Functions:
In addition to the physical and mental capabilities implied by the responsibilities detailed above, the essential functions of a Special Education Instructional Assistant include: reading, writing, hearing, and speaking effectively, and walking or use of a wheelchair or other mobile device. Essential functions include standing, bending and lifting/moving items up to 50 pounds, if applicable. The job of a Special Education Teacher Assistant involves adapting to a changing educational environment and therefore, while accurate, this list is not exhaustive.
