Primary Function The Field Service Technician I is an entry-level field technician responsible for performing basic electrical testing, maintenance, and commissioning activities on high-voltage substations and power systems under close supervision. This role focuses on developing foundational technical knowledge and safe work practices in an active field environment. The position will be based in our Abilene, TX office and will report to Dashiell's Field Supervisor. Duties & Responsibilities Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions: Perform electrical testing and commissioning activities on high-voltage substations, switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, and protective relay systems under close supervision. Perform basic electrical testing under direct guidance, including insulation resistance testing, contact resistance testing, turns ratio testing, power factor testing, and circuit breaker timing tests. Assist with protective relay testing and calibration using microprocessor-based relay test equipment (e.g., Doble, Megger, Omicron). Assist with testing and inspection of power apparatus including power transformers, current transformers, potential transformers, and medium- and high-voltage switchgear. Support testing and maintenance of low-voltage AC/DC systems including station batteries, battery chargers, inverters, DC distribution panels, and AC distribution systems under direct supervision. Support equipment start-ups and energization activities by preparing test equipment, running cables, and recording test data as directed. Maintain accurate and organized test documentation, field notes, and equipment logs under supervision. Follow all safety procedures and protocols, including proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and adherence to NFPA 70E and OSHA standards. Assist in the setup and breakdown of testing equipment and workspaces at project sites. Communicate testing status, observations, and any issues to the supervising technician or Field Supervisor promptly. Participate in Job Safety Task Analyses (JSTAs) and safety briefings prior to work activities. Support the maintenance and calibration of company test equipment and tools. Develop technical knowledge through on-the-job training, mentorship, and self-directed study of industry standards and equipment manuals. Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested. Contribute to a strong safety culture by consistently following safety procedures and actively participating in safety briefings. Help maintain data integrity and project documentation standards through accurate and thorough record-keeping. Support project efficiency by maintaining organized test equipment and workspaces at job sites. Demonstrate professionalism and reliability that reinforces Dashiell's reputation for quality field services. Minimum Qualifications / Experience Required Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Technology, or a related technical field; equivalent field technician experience may be considered in lieu of a degree (2 years for Associate's, 4 years for Bachelor's). Foundational knowledge of electrical systems through education or related exposure is expected. Basic understanding of high-voltage electrical systems, substations, power apparatus, and power distribution equipment. Ability to read and interpret basic electrical drawings, schematics, and one-line diagrams. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook). Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately record test data and maintain field documentation. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record; willingness to travel extensively, including overnight stays. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen. TWIC card or ability to obtain one. Preferred Experience with Doble, Megger, Omicron, or similar test equipment platforms. Prior experience in electric utility T&D construction or industrial commissioning environments. Familiarity with NFPA 70E, IEEE, and ANSI standards applicable to high-voltage testing. Physical Requirements LEVEL 4 - Field Technical (Testing & Commissioning) Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8-12 hours). Ability to climb stairs and ladders and access elevated work areas. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally. Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces. Ability to work near energized electrical equipment. Ability to wear required PPE at all times, including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, FR clothing, gloves, and hearing protection. Ability to operate company vehicles safely and maintain a valid driver's license. Ability to travel frequently, including overnight stays. Environmental Conditions Regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, humidity, and wind. Exposure to electrical hazards, energized equipment, and arc flash environments. Exposure to noise, dust, vibration, and industrial job site conditions. Driving & Safety-Sensitive Position This position is classified as safety-sensitive and requires maintenance of a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, compliance with company motor vehicle policies, and compliance with drug and alcohol testing requirements.
