Technology Integration Specialist
POSITION OVERVIEW
Are you an educator who loves helping others use technology in meaningful, student-centered ways? Portland Public Schools is seeking a Technology Integration Specialist, housed within the Data & Technology Department, who can connect instructional goals with the technology tools that bring them to life. Although the position sits on the Data & Technology team, it collaborates closely with our Elementary and Secondary Academic Network teams to ensure technology supports high-quality instruction and school success—with equity at the heart of every decision. As the district's lead expert on educational technology, you'll bring broad and deep knowledge across device ecosystems, learning management systems, AI tools, and data-privacy practices related to responsible and intentional use. You'll help guide thoughtful technology investments, lead the rollout and adoption of new initiatives, and build the capacity of educators across the district. This position is ideal for an experienced educator who is also a systems thinker, a skilled facilitator of adult learning, and a confident technology leader. You should be comfortable designing and delivering high-quality professional development for diverse audiences and coaching both educators and school leaders on using technology to strengthen instruction and improve student outcomes. This year-round position includes a generous benefits package, including 20 annual vacation days and full health and dental benefits. The salary range for this position is $70,000-90,000.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The statements below describe the general nature and scope of work being performed in this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned. Professional Development & Capacity Building Design and deliver high-quality professional learning to build educator capacity with district technology tools, with particular focus on adult learning. Provide ongoing, job-embedded professional development on effective technology integration that supports engagement and improved learning outcomes, in partnership with instructional leaders. Lead training programs for new and existing staff on district technology tools; create and maintain accessible user guides and documentation on the Staff Hub. Develop and record professional development sessions for asynchronous access and maintain online resource libraries for continued educator support. Support adult education programs in selecting and implementing digital learning tools aligned with adult learning principles; provide technical and instructional support for remote, hybrid, and virtual classroom models. Manage and implement annual staff training on data security, privacy, and responsible technology use. Digital Learning Tools & Ecosystem Management Serve as the district's in-house expert on educational technology, maintaining deep fluency across all district-supported platforms and emerging tools. Develop and maintain expertise in district hardware, software, and instructional platforms, including Google Workspace, Google Classroom, Class tools, LMS platforms, computer-aided instruction tools, and video-conferencing systems. Evaluate emerging educational technologies and advise district leadership on instructional value, cost implications, and alignment with district priorities. Lead the evaluation, selection, and piloting of new technology tools in collaboration with teachers and school leaders, ensuring alignment with instructional vision, student data privacy laws, and technology compatibility. Maintain the district software catalog and manage the digital tool evaluation process. Stay informed on state and national educational technology trends—including MLTI and other Maine initiatives—and represent the district at relevant conferences. Technology Integration Strategy & Leadership Collaborate with IT leadership and academic teams to shape and implement the district's long-term educational technology vision. Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Director of IT, providing insights and recommendations on planning, procurement, and technology direction. Collaborate with network teams, academic departments, and school-based stakeholders (e.g., librarians, school leaders) to support technology integration and building-level planning. Convene and support educator networks across buildings to build staff capacity, share best practices, and promote consistent, aligned technology use district-wide. Serve as a collaborator and convener for librarians, acting as their connection point to the Data & Technology department and building their capacity to lead technology integration and digital learning in their schools. Oversee specialized technology initiatives, including the responsible use of AI in the classroom, and support direction for digital literacy and computer science curriculum. Gather feedback from educators and school-based staff to inform long-term IT budgeting, identify cost-saving opportunities, and ensure efficient use of district technology funds. Manage district-wide technology initiatives with clear milestones, timelines, and communication to support seamless integration into school and department workflows. Technology Initiative Rollout & Asset Management Support Provide strategic guidance to IT leadership on district-wide technology deployments to support effective, user-centered adoption. Support district strategy for Chromebook+ rollouts to staff, partnering with IT operations team on ordering, deployment logistics, and educator training. Develop and deliver a structured Chromebook+ integration program that equips educators with the skills to use Chromebooks and associated tools as core instructional resources. Maintain the district software catalog and support evaluation of new digital tools and platforms to ensure alignment with instructional goals, student data privacy laws, and technology compatibility. Advise educators on selecting district-approved technology tools and collaborate with IT to ensure appropriate licensing and support for school-based needs. Provide input to IT leadership on the full lifecycle of staff and student 1:1 devices, based on a strong understanding of school needs and how devices are used for instruction. Compliance & Data Privacy Work with the IT and Data Teams to manage Technology Vendor Data Privacy Agreements (DPAs) and safeguard student and staff information. Champion district data privacy best practices through staff training, cross-functional collaboration, and reinforcement of established security protocols. Stay current on COPPA, FERPA, AUPs, and related policies, ensuring district practices align with legal requirements and advising school leaders and staff on compliant, responsible use of student and employee technology. Contribute to department-wide initiatives that foster collaboration, continuous improvement, and high-quality IT services; support day-to-day IT operations as needed.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree, preferably in education, technology integration, curriculum and instruction, or a related field. At least five years of teaching experience with demonstrated, effective use of instructional technology in the classroom. Broad and deep knowledge of educational technology platforms—including Google Workspace (Google Classroom, Class tools), LMS systems, computer-aided instruction tools, and video-conferencing platforms—with the ability to quickly learn and master new tools. Experience evaluating and recommending technology tools and supporting educators in adopting technology to meet the needs of all learners. Demonstrated ability to design and facilitate high-quality professional development for diverse adult audiences. Strong coaching skills and the ability to support adult learners in improving their instructional practice with technology. Ability to build trust and collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including teachers, administrators, families, and external partners, and to influence action without positional authority. Skill in translating technical information for non-technical audiences and choosing communication strategies that promote clarity and transparency. Ability to serve as a liaison between IT and school-based teams—bridging technical issues and human-centered needs to ensure technology decisions support instructional goals and the educational experience of staff and students. Strength in human-centered problem definition—focusing less on systems and technical mechanics and more on understanding user needs, clarifying the problem, and defining the vision for desired outcomes before determining what to build, buy, or implement. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining focus on long-term goals. Collaborative and self-directed work style; takes ownership of individual responsibilities and contributes to the team's collective success while actively seeking opportunities to learn from and support colleagues.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Reaching/handling/manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other computer components. Occasionally lift boxes, equipment, etc., weighing up to 40 pounds. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Must be able to travel to schools within the district.
