Job Description
Head of Valuation A growing insurance organization is seeking a Head of Valuation to lead its actuarial valuation function. This individual will be responsible for overseeing statutory reserve calculations, supporting actuarial memorandum development, and ensuring compliance with U.S. statutory accounting requirements. The role is primarily focused on annuity business, with broader exposure to life and health valuation as well. This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for an experienced actuary with deep technical knowledge of U.S. statutory valuation standards. For the right candidate, the position may also include serving as the Appointed Actuary , with responsibility for formal regulatory opinions and oversight of cash flow testing. Key Responsibilities Lead the valuation and reporting of statutory reserves for a core annuity block, including CARVM, VM-22, and applicable SSAP requirements Provide oversight for valuation work related to life and health products, where applicable Direct the annual experience study process, including analysis of mortality, lapse, and policyholder behavior, and translate findings into assumption recommendations Ensure valuation methodologies, controls, and reporting practices remain compliant with NAIC Statutory Accounting Principles Support broader financial reporting efforts, with additional exposure to GAAP or PGAAP valuation considered a plus Serve as a key contact for internal auditors, external auditors, and regulators on valuation processes, assumptions, and reserve adequacy Maintain strong governance over valuation models, including documentation, controls, validation, and ongoing oversight Partner closely with actuarial and accounting teams to ensure valuation results are accurately reflected in financial reporting and management materials For candidates with the appropriate qualifications, serve as Appointed Actuary, including responsibility for signing the Statement of Actuarial Opinion and overseeing the Regulatory Asset Adequacy Issues Summary Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) required Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) required Must meet, or be on a clear path to meet, the qualification standards for actuaries issuing Statements of Actuarial Opinion in the United States 7+ years of actuarial experience with strong depth in U.S. statutory valuation Significant annuity valuation experience required, with life and health valuation exposure strongly preferred Demonstrated experience conducting experience studies and setting actuarial assumptions based on emerging results Strong technical proficiency with actuarial modeling platforms such as GGY AXIS, Prophet, or MG-ALFA
