Job Description
Founded in 1977 as the Senior Care Action Network, SCAN began with a simple but radical idea: that older adults deserve to stay healthy and independent. That belief was championed by a group of community activists we still honor today as the "12 Angry Seniors." Their mission continues to guide everything we do. Today, SCAN is a nonprofit health organization serving more than 500,000 people across Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington, with over $8 billion in annual revenue. With nearly five decades of experience, we have built a distinctive, values-driven platform dedicated to improving care for older adults. Our work spans Medicare Advantage, fully integrated care models, primary care, care for the most medically and socially complex populations, and next-generation care delivery models. Across all of this, we are united by a shared commitment: combining compassion with discipline, innovation with stewardship, and growth with integrity. At SCAN, we believe scale should strengthen—not dilute—our mission. We are building the future of care for older adults, grounded in purpose, accountability, and respect for the people and communities we serve. The Job This graduate intern role applies data science and advanced analytics to generate insights that improve member health, cost, experience, and operational performance. The graduate intern will partner with clinical, operational, and analytics teams to support data driven decision making across care management, utilization management, and population health initiatives. There are two potential engagement paths: project based analysis, focused on applying data science techniques to analyze and communicate patterns in healthcare and operational data; and methods oriented application, focused on applying a specific advanced data science methodology (e.g., causal inference or large language models) across multiple relevant use cases. This role is ideal for a current graduate student or recent graduate (Master's or PhD preferred) with strong quantitative training and an interest in applying data science to real world healthcare challenges. This 8 week summer internship runs from June 22 through August 14, with a possible extension based on business needs. Candidates must be able to work within the Pacific Time Zone. You Will Builds and applies statistical and machine learning methods to clinical healthcare data (e.g., LLMs to generate discrete data from unstructured, apply adaptive clinical trial design, causal methods with observational data, time series methods, and/or compute optimization). Performs exploratory analysis to identify trends, anomalies, drivers, and data quality issues; selects appropriate analytic approaches. Builds repeatable analyses, notebooks, and basic pipelines; applies efficient computing practices to support scaled analytic or modeling tasks. Identifies and communicates useful patterns in data through clear visualizations, dashboards, and concise narratives for technical and non-technical audiences. Delivers findings and recommendations for decision-making; clearly states assumptions, limitations, and next steps in written and verbal updates. Partners with stakeholders to frame questions, define success criteria and key business metrics, and translate needs into project plans and analytic tasks. Maintains reproducible workflows by documenting data sources, code, model approaches, and results; supports knowledge sharing across projects. Follows data governance, privacy, security, and ethical AI standards; handles sensitive healthcare information appropriately. Performs work under direct supervision; resolves routine issues, escalates complex problems, incorporates feedback, and contributes to continuous improvement of data science capabilities. We seek Rebels who are curious about AI and its power to transform how we operate and serve our members. Actively support the achievement of SCAN's Vision and Goals. Other duties as assigned. Your Qualifications Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience Currently pursuing a Master's degree (or higher) or equivalent practical experience in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, or related quantitative field. Proficiency with Python or R for analysis (e.g., pandas/tidyverse) and version control basics (Git). Working knowledge of statistics (hypothesis testing, regression, experimental design) and data interpretation. Ability to write and optimize SQL queries; familiarity with relational data concepts. Understanding of core machine learning concepts (training/validation, bias/variance, evaluation metrics). Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills; ability to break down ambiguous problems. Clear written and verbal communication; ability to present results and recommendations. Attention to detail, documentation discipline, and commitment to reproducible work (notebooks, code, data notes). Collaboration skills; able to work under direct supervision and incorporate feedback quickly. Familiarity with visualization tools (e.g., matplotlib/ggplot, Power BI/Tableau) and storytelling with data. Maintains confidentiality and follows data privacy, security, and ethical AI guidelines.
