Lead AI/ML Engineer Rochester, NY | Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), University of Rochester The Laboratory for Laser Energetics is seeking a highly skilled and collaborative Lead AI/ML Engineer to help build the next generation of AI-driven scientific systems supporting cutting-edge research in: Inertial confinement fusion (ICF) High-energy-density physics Materials science Experimental diagnostics & simulation analysis This role is ideal for someone excited by the intersection of advanced AI and frontier science. You'll work alongside physicists, chemists, and engineers to architect and deploy machine learning solutions that accelerate scientific discovery and enable real-time decision-making.
Key areas include:
  • Large language models (LLMs) & agentic AI systems
  • Scientific inference pipelines
  • GPU/HPC infrastructure
  • ML model deployment & lifecycle management
  • AI tools for diagnostics, materials prediction, and plasma modeling We're looking for candidates with strong experience in: ?
PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX ? ML infrastructure & production systems ? LLM ecosystems (OpenAI, Hugging Face, LLaMA, Mistral, etc.) ? Docker, Kubernetes/OpenShift, APIs, and CI/CD workflows Preferred experience includes scientific computing, HPC environments, and interdisciplinary collaboration across research and engineering teams.
Salary range:
