Job Description
AI Engineer /
AI Systems Builder Company:
Horizon Motor Location:
Athens, Ohio Role Type:
Full Time, Contract, Internship to Full Time, or Project Based Experience Level:
Early career, recent graduate, self taught, or experienced applicants welcome About Horizon Motor Horizon Motor is an electric commercial truck company based in Athens, Ohio. We design, assemble, and support battery electric trucks for commercial, fleet, municipal, utility, and delivery customers. We are building trucks for real world work, not concept vehicles. That means service, uptime, diagnostics, parts support, warranty control, and fast technical assistance are just as important as the truck itself. Because we do not plan to rely on a traditional nationwide dealer network, we are building a modern service and support system using telematics, vehicle data, remote diagnostics, third party service providers, internal engineering support, and AI tools. About the Role Horizon Motor is looking for a motivated AI Engineer / AI Systems Builder to help us create practical tools for vehicle diagnostics, service support, and fleet maintenance. This role is a good fit for someone who is highly curious, hands on, technically capable, and excited about applying AI to real operational problems. You do not need to have years of formal AI experience or a degree from a top university. We care more about what you can build, how you think, how fast you learn, and whether you can turn messy information into useful working tools. You will work with our data engineer, our vehicle engineering team, our telematics provider, and our service partners to build systems that help diagnose truck problems, search technical documents, analyze vehicle data, and support technicians in the field. What You Will Work On You will help build AI tools that can search service manuals, wiring diagrams, parts information, repair procedures, and technical notes. You will help connect telematics data, CAN bus data, fault codes, vehicle alerts, service records, support tickets, warranty claims, and technician notes into useful diagnostic workflows. You will build tools that help our team and outside service providers answer questions like: What does this fault code mean? What should the technician check first? Has this issue happened on another truck? What parts may be needed? What repair procedure applies? Should this be escalated to engineering? Is this a one time issue or a pattern across the fleet? What We Are Looking For We are looking for someone who likes building things. You may be a recent graduate, self taught developer, AI hobbyist, hackathon builder, startup engineer, or someone with a few years of experience. The right person should be comfortable experimenting, learning quickly, asking good questions, and building practical tools that people can actually use. This is not a research role. It is a hands on role focused on using AI, data, and automation to solve real problems in vehicle service and fleet support. You should be comfortable with Python, APIs, databases, and modern AI tools. You should have experience building with large language models, retrieval systems, embeddings, vector databases, agents, automation tools, or similar technologies, even if that experience came from personal projects, open source work, school projects, hackathons, or startup work. Useful Skills Python programming. Working with APIs and databases. Building AI tools using LLMs, retrieval augmented generation, embeddings, vector databases, or AI agents. Ability to organize messy data and documents into useful systems. Interest in telematics, IoT, vehicles, robotics, manufacturing, or industrial equipment. Ability to work with engineers, vendors, technicians, and non technical users. Willingness to learn vehicle systems, CAN bus data, fault codes, and electric truck diagnostics. Helpful But Not Required A degree in computer science, data science, engineering, robotics, math, or a related field. Experience with telematics, vehicle diagnostics, CAN bus, fleet maintenance, predictive maintenance, or IoT data. Experience building dashboards, internal tools, support tools, or workflow automation. Experience with cloud platforms, data pipelines, or data warehouses. Open source projects, GitHub work, hackathon projects, AI apps, personal tools, or demos you can show us. Example Projects Build an AI assistant that helps a technician troubleshoot an electric truck issue. Create a searchable service knowledge base from manuals, wiring diagrams, parts lists, and repair procedures. Analyze telematics and fault code data to find recurring problems. Build a fleet health dashboard that shows which trucks may need attention. Create automatic summaries of support cases, technician notes, and warranty claims. Build tools that recommend likely causes, repair steps, parts, and escalation paths. What Success Looks Like Success in this role means our trucks become easier to support in the field. Technicians get better answers faster. Customers experience less downtime. Our internal team can see patterns sooner. Warranty costs become easier to understand and control. You will help build the system that allows Horizon Motor to support electric trucks without depending on a traditional dealer network. How to Apply Send your resume, GitHub profile, portfolio, project examples, or a short note about something you have built with AI, data, automation, vehicles, IoT, or diagnostics. We are more interested in seeing what you can build than in seeing a perfect resume. -- Sean Jones CEO Horizon Motor Benefits:
