Utilities (Water / Public Sector) Overview Mako Professionals is supporting a local water district on a critical SAP modernization initiative focused on migrating legacy ABAP code from an on-premise environment into SAP BTP. This effort is driven by a need to quickly transition existing functionality into the cloud while maintaining business continuity across a wide range of integrated systems. The initial phase will prioritize migration over full refactoring, with a follow-on phase focused on optimization and efficiency improvements within BTP. We are seeking a hands-on
SAP BTP / ABAP
Consultant who can support large-scale code migration, ensure system connectivity, and position the environment for future enhancements. Key Responsibilities Lead and support the migration of legacy ABAP code from on-prem SAP systems into SAP BTP Rewire and reconnect ABAP-based processes to external systems within the BTP environment Ensure continuity of critical integrations including banking interfaces, Fuel Master, Bentec (benefits), and other third-party systems Support connectivity across a large, distributed environment (200+ external endpoints/satellites) Execute a "lift-and-shift" migration approach, moving code as-is where required to meet project timelines Collaborate with functional and technical teams to validate system performance post-migration Identify areas of inefficiency in migrated code and document opportunities for future optimization Assist in planning for Phase 2 efforts focused on refactoring and performance improvements within BTP Support testing efforts including integration testing and UAT to ensure system stability Required Qualifications 7+ years of
SAP ABAP
development experience Hands-on experience with SAP BTP (Business Technology Platform), including extensions and integrations Proven experience migrating or modernizing ABAP code from on-premise to cloud environments Strong understanding of SAP integrations and external system connectivity Experience working with complex system landscapes and multiple third-party interfaces Ability to balance speed (migration) vs. long-term optimization (refactoring) decisions Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in high-impact environments Preferred Qualifications Experience with ABAP on Cloud, RAP model, or BTP-based development frameworks Familiarity with SAP Integration Suite (CPI) or PI/PO Experience supporting utilities or public sector clients Exposure to large-scale migration or transformation programs (S/4HANA or cloud-first initiatives) Understanding of performance tuning and optimization strategies post-migration Additional Notes This role will focus on rapid migration in the initial phase, with a longer-term roadmap for optimization and refactoring Strong emphasis on maintaining system connectivity and minimizing disruption to business operations Local candidates preferred due to occasional onsite collaboration needs
