Job Description

Job Description Under the general leadership of the Strategy, Architecture and Analytics director (SAA) and in conjunction with other University areas and external organizations when necessary, the Business Intelligence Programmer/Analyst is responsible for providing technical knowledge in Business Intelligence that enables the University to make decisions using current and accurate data by creating the conceptual and logical data models and the translation of the logical model into a physical model. The Business Intelligence Programmer/Analyst creates, reviews, and modifies ETL scripts and jobs to ensure accurate data capture and translations for a successful implementation of an enterprise BI solution. Day:
  • Serve as liaison between the user groups and the SAA team, ensuring the best technical solutions are developed for the University needs.
  • Work closely with the Institutional Research and Decision Support team (IRDS) to ensure University reporting requirements are supported by the LMU Enterprise Data Warehouse.
  • Work in concert with the ITS Business Intelligence and Analytics Analyst to design star schemas over varied sources of data, which meet the University business requirements.
  • Create the conceptual and logical data models and the translation of the logical model into a physical model.
  • Translate University business requirements into technical specifications, especially ETL data mapping specifications.
  • Work closely with the Business Intelligence and Analytics Engineer to translate high level ETL design into detailed ETL spec.
  • Review or modify ETL scripts and jobs to ensure accurate data capture and data transformation
  • Utilize ELT tools for creating ETL processes. Use SQL and/or other programming languages to code ETL instructions from specifications.
  • Test and debug ETL programs. Write and maintain documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, testing, changes, and corrections.
  • Monitor performance of programs after implementation.
  • Conduct reviews of project documents, including requirements, technical design and prototypes, test plan and test cases
  • Assist with testing and change management procedures.
  • Provide administration of the EDW and BI environment with a focus on routine maintenance, data loads, data analysis, and troubleshooting
  • Conduct performance monitoring and tuning of the EDW and BI environments
  • Conduct data audits and provide recommendations to mitigate risks
  • Represent LMU within internal and external communities and at professional organizations or associations, serve on committees as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience providing production support for several Oracle relational database management systems, and systems troubleshooting in progressively responsible positions.
  • Some experience with Oracle and third-party software, including, but not limited to, Oracle 11g/12c Enterprise Edition, Oracle Client, SQL
  • Plus, and TOAD.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with ETL tools ○ TALEND is preferred
  • Enterprise level knowledge experience of working with Data Modeling (Dimensional Schemas) using ER modeling tools, creating logical and physical Data Warehouse
  • Enterprise level knowledge experience of one programming language such as Java, C#, C+ 
  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive requirements, specifications, deployment procedures, testing plans, maintenance processes and incorporating complex, highly technical information.
  • Ability to multi-task and work as an effective member of a team.
