Children's Programmer/Clerk 201 North Mulberry Street, Mount Vernon, OH 43050 $15.20 - $16.28 an hour - Part-time $15.20 - $16.28 an hour - Part-time Job Overview We are seeking a part time (25 hour/ week)dedicated and detail-oriented Library Assistant to independently plan and implement story time programming for toddlers and families. The position will also have some circulation hours to assist customers in borrowing and using library materials, services and equipment. Additional responsibilities include creating library displays, assisting with other youth programs, and helping customers with reader's advisory information as appropriate. Responsibilities Provide exemplary customer service by answering directional and reference questions, locating materials, processing hold requests, monitoring behavior of library users, and ensuring the library is neat and orderly. Perform clerical duties common to a library environment including: checking in/ checking out materials, issuing library cards, collecting fines, charge payments for lost or damaged items, answering the phone, renewing materials. etc. Enforce library policy and procedures, provide direction, and problem solving. Plan and present library programs for youth, specifically storytime aged children. (Toddlers and Family). Implementation will be alone and or with other staff members. Instruct and assist customers in how to us Public Access Catalog terminal and other library equipment. Knowledge of available resources related to technology, including equipment, devices, social media, library website, and other digital content and audiovisual material that are offered by the library. Prepare for opening and closing by turning on/off lights and equipment. Organize, plan, and create library displays. All other duties as assigned. Experience Must enjoy working with youth and able to establish a good rapport with children of all ages. Show enthusiasm and commitment to excellent customer service, show courtesy and patience, and ability to work with all age groups and diverse population of customers Uphold the highest level of honesty and integrity and always represent the library in a positive and profession manner. Embrace innovation and experimentation with emerging technologies and related tools. Maintain an awareness of developments in the field of public library services. Excellent verbal, written, and telephone skills. Keyboarding, filing, basic math, and alphabetizing skills. Ability to follow verbal, written, and telephone instructions. Ability to maintain confidential information. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with customers, staff and general public. Ability to organize and prioritize workload. Ability to perform several tasks simultaneously and under pressure. Ability to work independently and with a team. Ability to perform detail-oriented duties accurately. Ability to operate and instruct others in operation of computer terminals and other equipment. Ability to recognize and respond to potential dangers to customers and staff. Knowledge of and ability to communicate library policies, procedures, and techniques to the public. Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and other software. Ability to perform the physical activities associated with this job, including repeated bending and lifting. Flexibility in scheduling in regard to lunch breaks, length of workday, staff vacations, illnesses, and emergencies. Must successfully pass a background check Must be eligible for lawful employment in the U.S. Schedule will likely include Monday 9-3, Tuesday 1-8, Wednesday 9-3and Thursday OFF, Every other Friday 9-3 and at least one Saturday a month 9-5 with the Friday before OFF. Along with the commitment and desire to provide excellent service to library customers, all Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County employees must have the ability to maintain predictable and regular attendance, work a flexible schedule including, daytime, evening, and weekend hours, communicate, the following library policy and procedure and develop and maintain positive working relationships with all internal and external customers. All employees must be able to understand library wide operations, satisfactorily perform all the responsibilities associated with a specific job title and meet the physical requirements of the same job. All employees must have the ability to alphabetize and perform basic math operations. In addition, all employees must have the ability to work according to the priorities as established by library administration and/or the library board of trustees and to adapt to change as necessary.
