POSITION
Desktop Technician Technology Department Salary Starting at : $52,000.00/ year The Melrose Technology Department manages the network and computers within the Melrose Public Schools. The Desktop Technician provides technical support services in wired, wireless, and cloud- based environments, assisting students, staff, and administrators. The role requires both independent and collaborative work to maintain and troubleshoot hardware, software, and audiovisual equipment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position assists school staff with technical support of laptop and desktop computers, applications, and related technology. Support includes configuration, installation, and testing of computer systems and peripherals within established standards.
The Desktop Technician will:
Support technology use in an educational setting. Respond to end-user needs professionally and respectfully. Support software such as Google Workspace for Education, MS Office, and district-approved applications. Repair Chromebooks/laptops/desktops/printers and other hardware as needed. Install software, PCs, printers, Chromebooks, VoIP phones, projectors/interactive panels, and other peripherals. Install and support wireless technologies. Perform hardware and software upgrades as necessary. Image hard drives for rapid deployment locally or over the network. Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware and software issues. Prioritize tasks using a Help Desk ticketing system. Communicate with building staff about repair progress and updates. Document all repairs and end-user requests. Support building staff with troubleshooting, technology maintenance, and inventory updates. Work with vendors to resolve technical issues. Assist in troubleshooting network issues and maintaining connectivity. Support and maintain VoIP telephone equipment and cabling. Maintain district-wide software and hardware inventories. Train end users and create documentation. Travel between district locations as required. Assist with department project-based work. Remain current with industry trends. Perform other duties as assigned.
DEGREE PREFERRED
Bachelors degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field preferred.
EXPERIENCE PREFERRED
Certifications such as
A+, ITIL, MCP
preferred; Network+ a plus. Experience supporting Windows, ChromeOS, and basic LAN/WAN concepts. Experience with classroom technologies such as interactive whiteboards, projectors, and printers.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to maintain and troubleshoot hardware and software in a Windows networking environment. Hands-on experience with Windows 10/11, LAN/WAN, and TCP/IP. Valid driver's license and vehicle. Physical dexterity and visual acuity are needed for working with small parts.
