IT Specialist -
Software and Systems Reports To:
Director of IT Summary:
This position is responsible for leading the development of internal applications and databases while assisting in overseeing the organization's digital infrastructure and ensuring operational continuity across systems. The IT Specialist will blend system administration skills with hands-on software engineering to drive innovation and support scalable operations in the Burton EMS manufacturing environment.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, test and maintain custom code and desktop applications to support internal business operations using agile project management techniques, proper version control and proper technical documentation.
  • Lead configuration, deployment, and optimization of internal IT systems, including workstations, cloud services, and networking hardware.
  • Architect and manage internal applications and dashboards using Python, Django, and other languages as needed, integrating them with existing ERP and SQL-based systems.
  • Develop and maintain custom software tools to automate workflows and improve production and administrative efficiency.
  • Oversee upgrades and security measures for communication systems, including email, VOIP, and wireless infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand software and hardware needs; design and implement tech solutions that meet operational requirements.
  • Provide hands-on support for server operations, backups, software licensing, and connectivity solutions.
  • Monitor and maintain database systems (SQL Server, MySQL), ensuring performance, availability, and data integrity.
  • Mentor junior IT staff or contractors as needed; provide technical direction for vendor-supplied software and equipment installations.
  • Document software logic, technical procedures, system configurations, and internal APIs.
  • Conduct routine audits and generate reports on system performance, security risks, and development backlog.
Quality and Compliance Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the organization's adherence to recognized industry standards and internal quality procedures.
  • Identify and resolve technical or procedural inconsistencies that affect product or system integrity.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by developing systems that promote traceability and error prevention.
  • Ensure compliance with data management standards and participate in internal audits where applicable.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent technical experience.
  • Proficiency in backend programming using Python, Django, and other languages as needed.
  • Solid understanding of relational databases such as MySQL and SQL Server; able to write and optimize complex queries.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows-based server systems, Active Directory, Group Policy, and network protocols (DHCP, DNS, VLANs).
  • Experience with scripting in PowerShell, Access VBA, or C#/VB.NET is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with virtualization (e.g., Hyper-V), Office 365 administration, and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Windows and Linux/UNIX server administration.
  • Familiarity with hybrid cloud environments and modern DevOps tools.
Other Skills:
  • Effective communicator able to interact across departments and explain complex tech concepts to non-technical users.
  • Analytical problem-solver with experience in troubleshooting system failures and software bugs.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to other employees of the organization. Ability to perform routine technical computer tasks including spread sheets, etc.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret line and bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems by applying logical reasoning.
