JOB SUMMARY
The Building Automation Controls Specialist is responsible for the overall management, performance, and reliability of building automation and HVAC control systems across the health system. This role provides advanced technical leadership for
BAS, HVAC
controls, chillers, boilers, and pneumatic systems. The position supports the main campus, outpatient clinics, community hospitals, and administrative office locations. The Manager ensures systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and operational requirements while supporting clinical environments.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Technical and Operational Responsibilities Manage, maintain, and optimize Building Automation Systems across multiple facilities, including acute care, outpatient, and administrative locations. Provide advanced technical oversight of HVAC control systems, including chillers, boilers, air handlers, VAV systems, and pneumatic controls. Lead troubleshooting and resolution of complex BAS and HVAC control issues to minimize downtime and ensure patient safety. Oversee system programming, testing, commissioning, and performance verification for new installations, renovations, and upgrades. Develop and enforce BAS standards, sequences of operation, and control strategies to support energy efficiency, reliability, and regulatory compliance. Coordinate with Facilities, Engineering, Infection Control, IT, and clinical stakeholders to align system performance with operational needs. Manage external vendors and contractors, including service agreements, system integrators, and commissioning agents. Monitor system alarms, trends, and analytics to proactively identify performance issues and improvement opportunities. Support emergency response, after hours system issues, and critical infrastructure events as required. Maintain documentation including control drawings, sequences, as built documentation, and system inventories. Support energy management initiatives and sustainability goals through optimized system performance. Train facilities staff on BAS operation, troubleshooting, and best practices. Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and healthcare regulatory requirements. Leadership and Management Responsibilities Provide technical leadership and mentoring to BAS technicians and facilities staff. Assist with workforce planning, training development, and performance feedback. Support capital planning and lifecycle management for BAS and HVAC control systems. Participate in budget development related to controls systems, maintenance, and upgrades.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related technical field. Required Or Associate's Degree willing to consider an associate's degree in in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related technical field with 4 years additonal years of experience beyond the required minimum. Required Licenses and Certifications . . . Work Experience 1-3 years. progressive experience with building automation and HVAC control systems in large, complex facilities.. Required And 1-3 years. Advanced knowledge of BAS platforms, HVAC controls, chillers, boilers, air handling systems, and pneumatic controls.. Required 1-3 years. Experience supporting multi site healthcare organizations including hospitals and clinics.. Preferred 1-3 years. Experience with energy management systems and building analytics tools.. Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities Advanced knowledge of Building Automation Systems, including HVAC controls architecture, programming, and system integration In depth knowledge of HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, air handling units, VAV systems, and terminal devices Strong understanding of pneumatic control systems and legacy control infrastructure Knowledge of healthcare facility requirements related to HVAC operation, indoor air quality, and critical environments Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, and regulations impacting building automation and HVAC systems Knowledge of energy management principles, system optimization, and sustainability strategies Understanding of BAS networking, system trend analysis, alarms, and data analytics Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations impacting building automation and HVAC systems Ability to program, configure, modify, and optimize control sequences and logic Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, control schematics, sequences of operation, and technical documentation Strong analytical skills to evaluate system performance, trends, and operational data Ability to train and mentor facilities staff on BAS operation, troubleshooting, and best practices Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions with limited supervision Ability to adapt to evolving building automation technologies and platforms Physical Demands A thorough completion of this section is needed for compliance with legal standards such as the Americans with Disabilities Act.
