Description Information Technology (IT) invites applications for a Computer Support Specialist I to provide frontline technical support and service to UM students, staff, and faculty. The primary focus is on assisting with university-provided hardware, software, and systems. This role also includes some support for end-users' personal devices to ensure successful access to UM systems, such as the learning management system. Examples of Duties and Responsibilities Provide technical support to UM faculty, staff, and students through multiple channels, including walk-ins, phone, and email Troubleshoot a range of hardware and software issues on Windows, Mac OS, and mobile devices Assist users with university-managed systems, including account setup, password resets, software installation, and basic network connectivity Support UMOnline's learning management system, aiding in course access and navigation Provision, deploy, and configure University-owned computers and peripherals Document support interactions and solutions in the trouble ticketing system to ensure continuity and consistency in service delivery Facilitate the decommissioning of outdated equipment, ensuring secure data removal and proper disposal Minimum Qualifications At least one (1) year of experience providing technical support in an academic or professional setting or equivalent education in a technical field Proficiency in using a ticketing system to track, manage, and resolve technical issues Experience in provisioning and deploying computers and related hardware Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact effectively with diverse audiences Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software issues across multiple platforms (Windows, Mac, and mobile) Familiarity with remote computing tools such as Remote Desktop Connection and screen sharing utilities Basic understanding of network shares, command line, and console interaction Ability to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., which requires mobility and physical demands Capable of working from ladders and in confined spaces Dexterity necessary for the use of tools and performing cabling tasks Preferred Qualifications Associates' degree in Information Technology, Educational Technology, or a related field, and at least two (2) years of experience providing technical support in an academic or professional setting Experience working with enterprise-level IT environments and tools Familiarity with higher education-specific applications, including learning management systems and academic software Ability to quickly learn and implement new technologies as they become available Experience serving as an escalation point for complex technical support issues Demonstrated ability to self-educate and keep up-to-date on IT systems, procedures, and emerging technologies Experience translating client needs into functional technical solutions
