Full Job Description Title:
Computer Lab Monitor - Contract 10 Hours Weekly, M-Th Duties and Responsibilities Responsible for providing a nurturing and welcoming environment for children who come to the computer lab at public housing development. Must have basic computer knowledge and ability to assist children with signing on the computer and navigating approved sites for tutoring, reading or age appropriate entertainment. The computer monitor opens and closes the computer lab. When closing, the monitor wipes down keyboards and surfaces with antibacterial wipes, empties trash and closes and locks the lab and community center. The computer monitor helps children get sign on to approved websites for learning. The computer monitor helps children with homework as needed. The computer monitor also encourages other "non-screen" alternatives such as reading, drawing, playing games, etc. The computer monitor monitors the websites that children are accessing to make sure they are appropriate in content. The computer monitor pays attention to childrens' behavior in the computer lab, making sure they follow computer lab rules. The computer monitor must create a welcoming and safe atmosphere for children. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications and Knowledge Must be computer literate and have the ability to assist children with signing on and navigating approved websites and programs. Must have H.S. Diploma or GED. Must have the ability to provide guidance for children to make good decisions. Must be 18 years of age or older. Supervision Received and Given The computer monitor is under the supervision of the Director of Community Services. Guidelines The computer monitor operates under the guidelines of the computer lab as well as WHA computer policies. Complexity Work performed by the employee is relatively routine to the unusual. The employee performs tasks under the guidance of the Director of Community Services. Occasionally, the employee must have to correct children and remind them of computer lab rules and guidelines. If these guidelines and rules are not followed, the computer monitor may have to ask the child to leave the computer lab. Scope and Effect The employee's work affects children living in public housing. Studies have shown that when children practice reading for 20 minutes a day, their reading scores improve. Personal Contacts The employee's contacts are primarily with children living in public housing and occasionally their parents. The employee also has occasional contact with other public housing residents as well as public housing staff. Physical Demands The employee's work is performed indoors in a computer lab. The employee may have to push, pull and/or lift objects weighing up to and more than 25 pounds, such as boxes of paper. The employee works during the week during afternoon hours. Work Environment The employee's work is in-office at the computer labs at WHA.
