Job Description

Nexteer Automotive is seeking a Systems Engineering Co‑op to join our Global Systems Engineering team. This role is designed for current undergraduate students who are interested in gaining hands‑on experience in automotive systems development while applying classroom learning in a real‑world engineering environment. As a Systems Engineering Co‑op, you will support the development of advanced automotive systems by assisting with foundational systems engineering activities across the product lifecycle. You will work closely with experienced systems engineers and cross‑functional teams, gaining exposure to requirements development, system architecture, verification activities, and competitive benchmarking in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment. This co‑op provides an excellent opportunity to build practical engineering skills, learn industry standards, and explore a potential full‑time career in systems engineering. Key Responsibilities Assist with the development and documentation of system‑level objectives and requirements Support the allocation of requirements across hardware, software, mechanical, and manufacturing teams Help create and maintain system architecture artifacts such as block diagrams, boundary diagrams, and DFMEA documentation Collaborate with engineering teams and customer‑facing groups to understand system needs and development constraints Participate in system design reviews, technical reviews, and verification activities as a learning contributor Support basic trade‑off analyses related to system performance, cost, and reuse opportunities Assist with competitive benchmarking activities to evaluate products, technologies, and system capabilities Use internal tools to track technical activities and support product development plans Contribute ideas toward continuous improvement of systems engineering processes, tools, and templates Learn and apply Nexteer systems engineering standards, processes, and best practices Required Qualifications Candidate must be attending a 2-year college or 4-year university local to Saginaw Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Controls, or related field) Candidate must be able to work 20-32 hours during Fall and Winter semesters Up to 40 in the summer Must have cumulative 2.7 GPA on 4.0 scale Must be a full-time student (12 or more credits) during Fall and Winter semesters Completion of at least one year of undergraduate engineering coursework Basic understanding of engineering or systems concepts gained through coursework or projects Ability to work effectively in a team‑based, cross‑functional environment Strong communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills Motivation to learn, ask questions, and grow in a technical engineering role Candidate must have right to work in the US and not require current or future sponsorship Preferred Qualifications Academic project, internship, or prior co‑op experience related to automotive or mechatronic systems Exposure to modeling or simulation tools such as MATLAB or Simulink Familiarity with requirements documentation, project tracking, or technical reporting from coursework General awareness of functional safety, ISO 26262, or ASPICE concepts (not required) Interest in automotive technologies such as electrification, advanced driver assistance systems, or software‑defined vehicles Nexteer is an Equal Opportunity Employer Disabled/Minorities/Veterans/Women Nexteer is an E-Verify employer.
