Data Science & Engineering Reports to: Senior Director of Data Science (IC role) About Arccos Arccos builds the golf industry's most advanced on-course performance platform, capturing millions of sensor, analytics, and behavioral events daily across IMU-based shot detection, mobile app telemetry, subscription systems, web/product analytics, OEM integrations, geospatial data, and our production MySQL database. Every part of the company depends on this data — business analytics, ML training, on-course product features, and data science research — and our underlying platform hasn't kept pace with the growth in volume, complexity, or stakeholders. Building a unified, intentional, well-modeled data platform across all of these domains is mission-critical to our next phase of growth. The Opportunity Our data volume, structure, and business logic have grown faster than our underlying architecture. Today, working with our data requires deep tribal knowledge, significant time investment, and complex queries across scattered tables and pipelines. We are hiring a Senior or Staff Data Engineer — an individual contributor who will take end-to-end ownership of designing, documenting, and implementing Arccos's next-generation data platform across every system that produces or consumes data: business analytics, on-course shot and sensor data, ML training pipelines, product analytics, and more. The first focus will be the curated business data layer (bronze silver gold) that powers analytics and decision-making — but ownership extends company-wide from there. This role is for someone who loves building systems right, turning chaos into clarity, and enabling business, product, data science, and ML teams to move dramatically faster. What You'll Do Architect and Implement a Modern, Unified Data Platform Lead the redesign of Arccos's data platform, turning fragmented tables and tribal knowledge into a coherent, well-documented system built for scale. Build the Business Data Layer Build the curated bronze/silver/gold datasets that turn operational data into trustworthy, reusable business insight across sales, marketing, finance, ops, and growth. Design a Data Ecosystem that Supports AI-Driven Analytics Architect the schemas, metadata, and documentation discipline that lets LLM-powered tools and agents reliably understand our data and produce trustworthy answers. Build High-Quality Data Pipelines Own the ingestion and transformation pipelines spanning app telemetry, shot/sensor data, subscriptions, commerce, and product analytics — bringing engineering craft to a layer that has grown organically. Create Standards, Documentation, and Governance Set the conventions, quality bar, and governance practices that the rest of the organization follows, so the platform stays trustworthy as it grows. Partner Across the Organization Work closely with business, product, data science, and engineering counterparts to ensure new data structures are designed correctly from the start rather than retrofitted later. What We're Looking For Required 6+ years in data engineering. Demonstrated experience architecting both transactional database systems and data warehouses — understanding how data flows from OLTP sources into analytical environments and designing both sides well. Strong experience building business data warehouses and analytics layers that serve sales, marketing, finance, and operations stakeholders. Experience with data engineering for both software products and business analytics.
Deep experience with:
AWS (S3, Lambda, IAM, Airflow) Snowflake (performance tuning, modeling, optimization) MySQL (schema design, query optimization, managing production OLTP data as a source for analytics) Python for ETL/ELT development SQL expertise at a high craft level. Experience working with large semi-structured datasets (JSON, Parquet, logs). Understanding of how to optimize LLM experience through context, metadata, documentation, and schema design. Strong communication and documentation skills. Leadership experience setting team standards and helping teammates rise to that standard. Thrives as a high-ownership, self-directed individual contributor who can assess what needs to be done and drive toward it autonomously. Nice to Have Interest in golf or sports data. Experience with business analytics for retail products. Experience supporting ML training pipelines (S3 high-memory/GPU compute). Database administration familiarity (replication, uptime management, performance troubleshooting) — this role is not a DBA, but comfort interfacing with outsourced DBA resources is a plus. Familiarity with schema migration strategies. Success in the First 90 Days Within 30 Days Develop a thorough understanding of Arccos's current data landscape — MySQL schemas, Snowflake warehouse, S3 data, pipelines, and key pain points. Build relationships with business stakeholders across sales, marketing, finance, and growth, and understand their most painful data needs. Produce a documented assessment of the ecosystem: gaps, risks, duplication, and technical debt. Begin contributing to active feature development and new initiatives (e.g., LLM/AI logging and data architecture needs) in parallel with onboarding. Deliver a proposed Target State Architecture with clear principles and a phased implementation plan, including automated data quality checks and monitoring. Within 90 Days Stand up initial canonical models for key business and product domains (e.g., subscriptions, commerce, users, sessions, shot-level data). Establish naming conventions, transformation standards, and folder structures. Deliver an AI-ready data dictionary covering key MySQL and Snowflake tables — every table and field documented with clear descriptions optimized for LLM consumption. Deliver initial documentation and lineage mapping for top critical pipelines. Reduce query complexity for high-impact stakeholders across business, product, and data science. What We Offer Competitive total compensation (base + equity) aligned to senior/staff-level scope Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance 401(k) program with company match Golf benefits—rounds reimbursed for testing and occasional travel to top courses for team events A chance to make a meaningful impact as we scale and grow Equal Opportunity Employer Arccos is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected characteristic.
