Higher Heights office — 496 Newhall Street, Hamden, Connecticut (in-office) Position Summary HHYEP is seeking a detail-oriented Data Specialist Intern to help track, organize, and report on the student and program data that drive our college access work. This is an excellent opportunity for a current undergraduate or graduate student, or a gap-year candidate, interested in data analysis, public health, education research, or nonprofit evaluation to gain hands-on experience managing real program data with direct impact on student outcomes. This is an office-based role at our Hamden headquarters. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with spreadsheets and databases, detail-oriented, and able to translate raw numbers into clear, useful information for staff and funders. Primary Responsibilities Maintain accurate, up-to-date student and program data across HHYEP's tracking systems. Enter, clean, and audit data collected from advisors, instructors, and program staff. Build simple dashboards and reports summarizing student progress, attendance, and outcomes. Support staff in preparing data for grant reports, board updates, and funder requests. Help design and distribute surveys to students, families, and partner schools. Identify data trends or gaps and flag them for program staff. Document data-entry procedures to support consistency across the team. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong attention to detail and comfort working with large sets of data. Working knowledge of spreadsheets (Excel/Google Sheets); familiarity with basic data visualization tools is a plus. Genuine interest in education, college access, or youth development work. Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and maintain confidentiality of student information. Clear, professional written communication for summarizing findings to non-technical staff. Education and Qualifications Current undergraduate or graduate student, or gap-year candidate; majors in data science, statistics, public health, education, or a related field preferred but not required. Prior coursework or experience with data entry, surveys, or basic analysis is a plus. Basic computer skills; experience with Google Workspace and Excel/Google Sheets required. Schedule Expectations This internship runs 6-10 months on a rolling basis and can be arranged for academic credit in coordination with the intern's school. Hours are flexible and set in coordination with the Executive Director.
