Initial ~20 hours (with potential for extension) Overview We are seeking a highly experienced Data Center Design Consultant to support the design and planning of a 14-rack, high-performance data center environment . This role will focus on developing a comprehensive design package covering cooling, power, structured cabling, and monitoring systems , while coordinating closely with the client and their architect. This is a hands-on consulting role requiring deep expertise in modern data center design, including hot/cold aisle containment, in-row cooling, and high-density infrastructure planning , with an emphasis on future scalability (including liquid cooling readiness). Key Responsibilities 1. Design Consulting & Site Assessment Conduct a technical site assessment of the existing space Review provided floor plans/layouts and validate feasibility Document environmental constraints, risks, and opportunities Develop a Data Center Infrastructure Requirements document Coordinate with the client's architect to integrate DC-specific requirements 2. Data Center Layout & Space Planning Create 2D/3D CAD rack layouts for (14) OCP ORv3 44U racks Design hot/cold aisle containment strategy (HAC) Plan rack placement, airflow, and white space optimization Ensure scalability and future readiness for liquid cooling Maintain high-end "showcase" aesthetic design standards 3. Cooling & Mechanical Engineering Design in-row cooling architecture (N+1 configuration) Develop CFD modeling simulations to validate airflow and eliminate hotspots Create piping/plumbing schematics (chilled water or DX systems) Ensure thermal efficiency for high-density compute environments 4. Electrical & Power Engineering Specify and design: Intelligent rack PDUs (L6-20, 20A/250V) In-rack UPS systems (6kVA units) Develop electrical one-line diagrams from utility to rack level Plan power distribution and redundancy strategy 5. Structured Cabling & Connectivity Design Develop full structured cabling design (fiber + copper)
Create:
Rack elevations and connectivity matrices Overhead cable tray and pathway design Fiber architecture using Corning EDGE systems Cat6a copper distribution and patching strategy Design labeling standards and cable management systems Produce detailed cable schedules and installation blueprints 6. Monitoring & DCIM Design Design sensor deployment (temperature, humidity, leak detection) Architect DCIM/monitoring dashboard framework Enable full visibility of power, cooling, and connectivity systems Support "showcase" visualization requirements for client tours 7. Documentation & Deliverables Produce full design package including: Bill of Materials (BOM) Construction-ready drawings Submittal documentation Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) As-built drawings (post-implementation) Identify long-lead equipment and procurement recommendations 8. Coordination & Project Support Collaborate with: Client stakeholders Architect Contractors and vendors Provide optional project management support during build phase Assist with installation validation and commissioning guidance (if required) Required Qualifications 7+ years of experience in data center design or infrastructure engineering Proven expertise in: High-density data center environments Cooling systems (in-row, containment strategies) Power distribution and redundancy Structured cabling (fiber and copper) Strong experience with CAD design tools (AutoCAD, Revit, or similar) Experience producing construction-ready design documentation Ability to work onsite in Mountain View, CA Preferred Qualifications Experience with OCP ORv3 rack environments Familiarity with Corning EDGE fiber systems Experience designing "showcase" or client-facing data centers Background in liquid cooling readiness or advanced cooling strategies RCDD or equivalent structured cabling certification (preferred)
