- 6 PM The Smart Hands Level 1 Technician provides on-site support in a data center , specializing in fiber optic and network cabling.
This role involves patch panels, port connections, cable labeling and dressing, tracing, installing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining fiber optic cables, Cat 6 cables, and network links in a data center environment. Must have experience working in the data center.
Key Responsibilities:
Fiber Optic Cable Installation and Maintenance:
Install, terminate, and test fiber optic cables, including single-mode and multi-mode fibers. Use fiber optic testers and power meters to troubleshoot and certify fiber links. Identify and repair damaged fiber cables or connectors. Understand and follow the fiber color code standards
Network Cable Installation:
Install and terminate Cat 6 network cables, ensuring proper wiring standards. Test and certify network cables using cable testers. Perform patch panel installation, labeling, and cable management. Identify and resolve connectivity issues related to copper cabling.
Fiber Cable Types and Standards:
Work with various fiber cable types, including: Long-distance, high-speed connectivity. Short-distance applications, typically within data centers.
Fiber Color Code:
Follow standard fiber optic color codes for proper identification: Maintain proper documentation for fiber patch panels and link assignments.
Troubleshooting Fiber Optic Issues:
Utilize power meters and visual fault locators to diagnose fiber optic problems. Identify and resolve signal loss, light decrease, or connector issues in fiber links.
Network Cable Links:
Ensure proper termination and testing of both fiber and copper links between networking devices. Perform cable tracing, labeling, and documentation to ensure the accuracy of network connections.
Network Tools and Equipment:
Use network tools such as: Crimping tools for Cat 6 cable termination. Punch-down tools for patch panel installations. Cable testers (e.g., Fluke testers) for certifying network and fiber links.
Installation and Support:
Assist in the installation of network hardware, such as switches, routers, and servers. Connect the laptop to a terminal device. Join a Teams chat session to assist in troubleshooting/validate network-related connection issues. Perform regular maintenance checks on data center infrastructure, amber light checks, including cable management and equipment integrity.
Requirements:
Understanding of fiber optic cabling, including single-mode and multi-mode fiber types. Knowledge of fiber optic color codes and termination standards. Experience with network cable installation (Cat 6, patch panels, etc.). Ability to troubleshoot fiber optic and copper network links. Familiarity with
SFP, GSFP
transceivers, and their installation. Proficiency in using network tools for testing, terminating, and certifying cables The ability to pick up equipment weighing anywhere between 20 lb. and 40 lb. Ability to carry and walk up "A Type Ladder". Basic knowledge of networking fundamentals (IP addressing, subnets, etc.). Strong attention to detail, ability to follow directions on live chat Ability to connect a laptop to a terminal device via Putty to allow remote user access to the device
Qualifications:
Plus, but not required, technical certification or relevant training (e.g., CompTIA Network+, Fiber Optics Certification, Network+, CCNA, CCNP). Experience in troubleshooting network connections of fiber SM, MM, and Ethernet Cat5, Cat6. Using trouble ticket systems, i.e., ServiceNow Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively with remote teams.
