As the Director of Performance Data, Evaluation, & Research, you will report to the Senior Executive Director of Research, Planning, & Assessment and provide leadership for the district's performance management, evaluation, and research functions. This role is responsible for supporting the implementation of the Board-adopted Vision, Values, Goals, and Guardrails (VVGG) through the development of performance measures, progress monitoring systems, data analysis, and reporting processes that inform decision-making and continuous improvement. You will lead the district's progress monitoring efforts by coordinating the collection, analysis, and interpretation of implementation and outcome data; preparing reports and presentations for district leadership and the Board of Education; and facilitating continuous improvement discussions that support strategic priorities. In addition, you will oversee program evaluation activities and research partnerships that generate actionable insights to strengthen educational outcomes and organizational effectiveness. Essential Duties The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list. As the Director of Performance Data, Evaluation, & Research you will: Direct the development and refinement of interim goals, guardrails, metrics, targets, and theories of action aligned to the Board-adopted VVGGs Lead districtwide progress monitoring processes that assess implementation and outcomes in support of VVGG-related initiatives Facilitate continuous improvement cycles with district leadership to identify successes, barriers, and opportunities for improvement Serve as the district lead for Board-facing progress monitoring workshops, including the development and coordination of the reports, presentations, and follow-up actions Design and maintain performance frameworks that define how implementation and impact will be assessed for VVGG-related initiatives Develop and maintain systems and processes for collecting, integrating, validating, and analyzing implementation and outcome data from multiple sources Synthesize quantitative and qualitative data into actionable analyses, reports, and presentation that support organizational learning and decision-making Partner with VVGG Initiative teams to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and accessibility of the underlying and summarized data used for progress monitoring and continuous improvement Lead the design and implementation of evaluations that assess the effectiveness and impact of key district programs, including Lesson Study, Community Schools, Salesforce, Continuous Improvement Monitoring (CIM) for Significant Disproportionality, and other emerging priorities Partner with program leaders to establish evaluation frameworks, performance measures, and improvement strategies Oversee evaluation staff and ensure findings are communicated effectively and used to inform decision-making Build district capacity to use research, evaluation, and evidence as drivers of continuous improvement Oversee the district's review, approval, and monitoring processes for external research and evaluation projects Serve as the district's primary liaison with researchers, evaluators, universities, and external partners Guide research design, data-sharing agreements, and collaborative studies that advance district priorities Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and district policies governing research and data use.
The strongest candidates will have:
Five (5) years full-time equivalent professional-level experience conducting and communicating analysis and research, in an educational agency research office, university or other research organization, and/or similar organization providing technical assistance to educational agencies Training and professional experience in improvement science methods, including leading teams through the processes of developing and testing their theories using a range of data types and sources, and facilitating sense-making among diverse teams to act on data for continuous improvement Understanding of educational measurement and indicator development Experience with designing data systems and workflows Familiarity with software for building databases, such as Salesforce, Google Cloud, or Amazon Web Services Experience using Tableau or similar software for creating dynamic data dashboards Proficiency in R and/or Python for data manipulation and analysis, in conjunction with basic knowledge of SQL Expertise in mixed methods from multiple disciplines in research design, sampling strategies, and analytical techniques for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data Experience applying statistical process control techniques for visualizing and detecting significant variation Knowledge of the data and analytics requirements for federal, state, and local accountability systems for California public schools Understanding of data privacy, including implications of education regulations such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Excellent written, oral, and visual communication, collaboration, and facilitation skills, including ability to engage a variety of audiences through multiple interaction and representation formats (e.g., large groups, staff meetings, executive briefings, research briefs, infographics, technical reports) Publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national conferences Minimum Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor's degree (B.A. / B.S) from an accredited college or university with coursework in education, psychology, sociology, economics, measurement, or related social science fields with research methods training (advanced degree strongly preferred) Four (4) years of experience performing professional-level responsibilities in educational analytics or related field Strategic leadership and management experience (K-12 public educational setting strongly preferred) Substitution Education requirements may be substituted for additional professional-level experience on a year for-year basis.
