Job Description
Position Summary The Utility Engineering & GIS Technician performs technical, analytical, and field duties to support utility infrastructure projects, operations, and maintenance activities. This dual-role position combines office-based engineering support with field-based utility locating, inspections, mapping, and data collection. The technician utilizes CAD, GIS, GPS, and SCADA-related systems to maintain accurate utility records and support the safe and efficient execution of utility projects. Key Responsibilities Utility Locating & Field Operations
- Respond to utility locate requests, including Arizona 811 "Call Before You Dig" tickets, from contractors, engineers, and property owners
- Travel to job sites to accurately locate and mark underground utility lines and infrastructure
- Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, as-built drawings, and utility maps to support locating activities and verify existing records
- Maintain detailed documentation of locate activities, including digital photographs, sketches, and field notes
- Identify and document discrepancies between utility records and field conditions
- Coordinate with contractors, engineers, field crews, and property owners regarding utility locate activities Engineering & GIS Support
- Prepare and revise construction and as-built drawings using AutoCAD while ensuring compliance with company and industry standards (Preferred)
- Maintain and update utility mapping databases using ArcGIS or other GIS software platforms (Preferred)
- Import survey and GPS field data into CAD and GIS systems to maintain accurate utility maps and records (Preferred)
- Generate maps, reports, presentations, and data visualizations for engineering, operations, and management staff (Preferred)
- Assist with utility asset management and infrastructure documentation SCADA System Support
- Assist with the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) hardware and software systems
- Support field instrumentation, sensors, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and related control system equipment
- Collaborate with operations and engineering staff on SCADA troubleshooting, upgrades, and improvement projects General Duties
- Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications & Requirements Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required
- Associate degree or technical training in drafting, civil engineering, GIS, utilities, or a related field preferred
- Experience with utility locating, CAD drafting, GIS mapping, or utility infrastructure preferred
- Experience with ESRI ArcGIS products, AutoCAD, or GPS data collection preferred
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Familiarity with interpreting utility maps, engineering plans, and record drawings
- Knowledge of standard utility locating practices and safety procedures
- Basic understanding of electrical systems and utility infrastructure
- Basic understanding of IT systems and networking preferred
- Ability to use surveying and GPS equipment preferred
- Understanding of property and land rights preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to perform field inspections and prepare reports
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Valid driver's license required Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to walk over uneven terrain for extended periods
- Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to safely work near traffic and in confined spaces when necessary
- Ability to safely perform work using proper ergonomic and safety practices Working Conditions This position operates in both office and field environments and requires regular interaction with utility staff, contractors, engineers, property owners, and the public.
