Job Description

GIS Specialist Will be required to look for, and apply for, grant funding for the continuation of the GIS Support system. Will be required to train upwards of six individuals in various tribal departments in how to perform the tasks of GIS network system. Geographic Information Systems Create maps and graphs, using GIS software and data collection equipment. Provides technical support for the implementation and operation of the GIS projects throughout the tribe. Perform research to obtain and expand existing data points Gather and report on GIS data and determine how data sets are best utilized through GIS Compile geographic data from many sources Consult with external stakeholders to access censuses, fieldwork, satellite and aerial imagery, and maps. Compile data for statistics to incorporate into documents and reports Build, manipulate, and update databases Enter new map data using cartographic principles Analyze and model relationships between geographic data sets Operate and maintain GIS system hardware, software, and peripherals Present information to clients and stakeholders in verbal and written form Produce GIS technical documents like proposals and presentations for stakeholders Conduct planning, research, and analysis, and assessments in order to best direct the project Navigate regulatory processes Ensure quality and continuous improvement through innovation, and meeting timelines and benchmarks. Provide consulting activities such as project management, tracking billable hours, communicating schedules, and directing/supervising team members. Conducts and coordinates end-user training.
Writes and maintains reports:
program database reports, forms, and queries Generates, maintains, and disseminates GIS layers Produces complex maps for user departments and outside agencies. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or IT/GIS related field plus 2 years' experience in GIS mapping. If no degree, four years' experience in GIS related field. At least two-years' experience using ArcGIS suite of GIS software, including ArcGIS Online. The ARC software has changed substantially over the past couple of years, so experience with 10.5 or higher will suffice. Working knowledge of handheld GIS units. Hardware brand does not matter; they all basically work the same. Interview questions regarding handheld devices should ask candidate to describe function and operation. Pursues continuing education and technical and professional development. Considerable knowledge of automated mapping and information processing methods and techniques. Considerable knowledge of the capabilities of automated mapping and geographic information processing systems. Considerable knowledge of cartographic principles, automated mapping, GIS database design and structure. Considerable knowledge of GIS hardware and software components, data communication, and network methods and techniques. Considerable knowledge to prepare a variety of correspondence and complex reports. Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals Ability to prepare written and oral presentations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, team members, and tribal programs.
