JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Technology provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and instructional support for all district technology systems. This role is responsible for aligning technology infrastructure, instructional tools, and data systems to support student achievement, staff effectiveness, and organizational efficiency. The Director ensures reliable and secure technology operations while advancing the use of technology in teaching, learning, and school administration. This position requires direct experience in K-12 school environments and a strong understanding of how technology supports classroom instruction, student data systems, and district operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leadership & Planning Develop and implement a districtwide technology plan aligned to instructional priorities and operational needs Serve as the primary advisor to district leadership on technology strategy, risk, and investments Collaborate with curriculum, finance, and school leaders to ensure technology supports student outcomes Lead and supervise technology staff, including technicians and support personnel Establish clear systems, workflows, and expectations for IT operations and service delivery Infrastructure and Systems Management Oversee all network infrastructure, including servers, wireless systems, firewalls, and internet connectivity Ensure reliability and performance of core systems, including: Student Information Systems (SIS) Learning Management Systems (LMS) Assessment and reporting platforms Communication systems (email, VoIP, websites) Manage hardware lifecycle, device deployment, and inventory systems Oversee installation, configuration, and maintenance of district technology systems Administer and support cloud-based platforms (e.g., Google Workspace, Microsoft 365). Track and manage the lifecycle of all technology hardware, including retirement of outdated devices. Coordinate building-level tech projects and installations in collaboration with school staff. Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Implement and monitor cybersecurity protocols, including backups, access controls, and threat detection Ensure compliance with FERPA, CIPA, HIPAA, and other applicable student data privacy laws Conduct regular system audits, risk assessments, and security reviews Lead districtwide awareness and training on data security and responsible technology use. IT Operations and Support Oversee help desk operations and ensure timely resolution of technical issues Establish service standards, ticketing systems, and escalation protocols Support user account management, permissions, and system access for staff and students Ensure consistent, high-quality technical support across all school sites Training and Staff Development Develop and implement a structured technology training plan for all staff Provide ongoing professional development on systems, software, and instructional tools Ensure staff are equipped to effectively use technology in both instructional and operational settings Maintain documentation, training materials, and user guides Instructional Technology Integration Support effective integration of technology into classroom instruction Partner with curriculum and instructional leaders to align technology tools with academic standards Oversee professional development for staff on instructional technology platforms and tools Ensure successful implementation of systems such as: Digital curriculum platforms Online assessments Gradebooks and reporting systems Procurement and Budget Develop and manage the annual technology budget in collaboration with business services Oversee procurement of hardware, software, and services Manage vendor relationships and contracts Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including E-Rate and grants
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's, Master's preferred
Experience:
5+ years in IT, with 2+ years in leadership CompTIA A+ Certification or equivalent Prior experience in a K-12 school district or public agency in IT environment
PREFFERED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Master's degree in Educational Technology, IT Management, or related field Experience supporting: Student Information Systems (SIS) Learning Management Systems (LMS) 1:1 device programs Experience with E-Rate and education technology funding Relevant certifications (CompTIA, Microsoft, Google, Cisco, etc.) Experience supervising staff and managing budget
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
K-12 technology systems, instructional platforms, and school operations Network infrastructure, cloud systems, and device management Student data privacy laws and compliance requirements Skilled in: Leading teams and managing cross-functional priorities Troubleshooting complex technical systems Communicating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders Ability to: Balance strategic planning with day-to-day operations Support both instructional and operational technology needs Build strong relationships with school leaders, staff, and vendors
