HMA Architecture Inc. is a California-based architecture firm focused on custom residential, multifamily, and select tribal government work. We are a design-driven firm that runs residential work with the rigor, clarity, and discipline of a larger practice. Our work is defined by speed, constructability, professionalism, and strong documentation. We are looking for a senior technical leader who can help strengthen the production side of the office, improve drawing quality, and bring consistency and accountability to project delivery.
JOB SUMMARY
HMA Architecture is seeking a Technical Director to lead the firm's technical production, drawing standards, and quality control across active projects. This is a senior leadership role for a highly capable technical architect who can direct production staff, oversee drawing development, improve coordination, lead QA/QC, and ensure projects are ready for permit and construction. The Technical Director will serve as the primary internal leader of HMA's production team. This person will manage the technical execution of work produced by drafters, designers, and production staff, while helping ensure that project documents are coordinated, buildable, code-conscious, and aligned with firm standards. This is not a passive review position. We are looking for someone who can lead, make decisions, train staff, solve problems, and take ownership of the technical side of project delivery.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Leadership Lead technical execution of projects from design development through construction documents and permit Establish, maintain, and enforce drawing standards, coordination standards, and production expectations Review plans, details, and consultant information for code compliance, constructability, completeness, and consistency Identify technical risks early and help resolve issues before they become problems during permit review or construction Support development of repeatable technical systems, drafting standards, and internal QA/QC procedures Production Management Manage the day-to-day work of production staff, including drafters, designers, and technical support team members Assign production tasks clearly and align staff workload with project priorities Direct drawing set development, consultant coordination backgrounds, revisions, redline incorporation, and internal deliverables Monitor production progress and intervene early when work is off track, incomplete, or below standard Ensure production staff are working from a clear plan and that deliverables are being assembled properly QA/QC and Deliverable Readiness Lead internal QA/QC reviews for key milestones, including DD, CD, consultant issue, and permit submittal sets Confirm that redlines are incorporated accurately and that recurring mistakes are corrected, not repeated Maintain accountability for drawing quality before projects reach principal review or are issued externally Help reduce last-minute rescue work by improving review discipline upstream Team Development Mentor and train staff in technical design, documentation, consultant coordination, code awareness, and production discipline Provide direct feedback to team members regarding quality, accuracy, efficiency, and ownership Help identify staff strengths, limitations, and development needs Participate in evaluation of technical and production hires as needed Consultant and Project Coordination Oversee technical coordination with structural, civil, MEP, energy, and other consultants as required Ensure consultant information is properly integrated into HMA documents Support project teams in resolving technical coordination issues and maintaining organized communication Work closely with firm leadership to keep projects moving without sacrificing drawing quality What Success Looks Like in This Role Production staff are organized, directed, and accountable Drawing quality improves across the office Technical mistakes and coordination misses are reduced Deliverables are more complete and better organized before review Projects are technically stronger before they reach principal review The Principal is no longer the default technical backstop for every project
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum 10 years of architectural experience Strong background in technical design, construction documents, and consultant coordination Significant experience in California residential architecture Experience leading production staff and reviewing work produced by others Strong understanding of building codes, constructability, detailing, and documentation quality Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Strong proficiency in Bluebeam Revu Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 / Microsoft Office Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills Ability to manage multiple active projects and production priorities at once
PREFERRED
California architect license Experience with custom residential and multifamily projects Experience building or enforcing office standards, QA/QC systems, and production workflows Experience mentoring junior and mid-level staff Familiarity with California permit submittal expectations and jurisdictional review processes
COMPENSATION
$120,000 - $165,000 per year, depending on experience, licensure, technical strength, and leadership capability

Primarily works in an office environment, performing tasks such as planning, designing, reviewing drawings, and administrative duties. Occasionally visits construction sites to review project progress, meet with contractors, and inspect work. Physical Requirements Must be able to walk and stand on construction sites, including over uneven surfaces, stairs, and temporary structures, for periods up to 1-2 hours. Ability to climb ladders or scaffolding occasionally, following all required safety protocols. Ability to bend, stoop, or kneel occasionally to inspect construction elements. Ability to carry or lift items such as plans, documents, or small tools weighing up to 20-25 lbs occasionally. Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computers, phones, and printers. Visual and auditory ability sufficient to review plans, read digital and printed materials, and communicate effectively in office and on-site settings. Must comply with all site-specific safety requirements, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
